Everyone knows college is the time of great change, development and growth in a young adult’s life. We’re faced with bigger decisions, more uncomfortable situations and more complex questions like: Who will I room with? Will they like me? Will I be invited to parties and gatherings? Will I pass my classes? Every worry you can imagine fills your head. One of the largest questions we all hold in our minds is the question of, "will I fit in?" Everybody wants a place that makes them feel accepted, a place where they are understood and feel connected. This is why I want to share some personal experience about how joining clubs can really help you grow, learn and connect simultaneously.
When I first arrived to Mount Saint Mary, I was already starting as a junior because I went to a community college back home. My greatest fear was making connections because there were people who have been here from the start of their college experience. I was also afraid that I may not fit in the way I wanted to or be able to make long lasting friends since I would only be here for two years. As these thoughts entered my head, I realized that in order to make connections and long lasting friends, I would have to be involved. With this understanding, I joined about six clubs. The ones that impacted me most are Poetry and Psychology Club. These clubs focus on the two of the most important topics personally to me. I have been writing and passionate about poetry since I was very young and I never had the chance or nerve to express and share my work until this club. I never thought I would meet a group of people just as in love and passionate about it as me. This club has helped me grow by taking me a little out of my comfort zone and allowing me to share my passion with others. I can also say I know these people will always be a huge part of my life forever.
The same goes for Psychology club. I joined this club because it is my other passion and my major. I knew being part of this would be a wonderful choice. It has given me the chance to learn new information, spread awareness about important issues and connect with people who want to help in this field as much as I do.
Both of these clubs and the other ones I am part of have been far more than just rewarding. They are experiences, moments and friends that I will carry with me throughout all of my life. There is a club for everyone. There is a place for everyone to fit in. The clubs, the development, the growth, the experiences and the friends are just waiting for you to take the initiative. I promise if you grasp the opportunity by hand, it will only lead you to good things.
