The first Wes Anderson film I watched left me with a feeling no film has yet to do. I was left empty and awakened. Empty because he pulled at my emotions and rang them dry. Awakened because at the end of the film I started thinking back and looking for clues to what more the simple film could behold. What was it in those thirteen minutes that held such beauty.
I now introduce you to Hotel Chevalier.

The characters are not identified with a name but are filled with such an explanation of who they are that a name would be useless. The explanation is in their past love. During the film the man proceeds to undress the woman and sees bruises along her arms and legs that her clothes were once covering. He questions them and she does not answer. She goes into saying that she does not want to lose him as a friend no matter what happens between them. His reply is unsettling for it awakens what every heartbreak unravels. For different people his words can be used in numerous ways. In the film they are filled with what was and what could become of him and his past lover.
"I promise I will never be your friend. No matter what. Ever."
