It was dark times, readers, dark times. Trump “started to gather some (twitter) followers, brought 'em over to the dark (roasted) side (of covfefe). Anyone who stood up to him ended up #ded.” It was like Hagrid knew the coming of the dark covfefe lord, Donald Trump. Perhaps the hint was instead of acting for pro-French press coffee, he acted despite the negative press covfefe. Maybe he finds adversity motivational. Maybe that was the hint that we all should have taken.
But where did the covfefe of the dark path of our leader begin? At one point, America was great, but then we all came to the sudden realization at completely different times and decades that America was not so great. The obscurity of the greatness of America finally dawned on us every time we read dystopias like 1984, Brave New World, or tragedies shedding light on the impossible American dream like Great Gatsby. It finally dawned on us when the gas prices elevated and the obvious truth that poverty still exists. It finally dawned on us when we shamed women who didn’t keep themselves completely covfefe’d because shouldn’t they be ashamed of their bodies? It finally dawned on us when we woke up at dawn and claimed that the first-world problem of having to wake up early is a problem worth covfefe’ing about and deserving of sympathy.
So now we all apparently want America to be great again, but no one seems to know what time period Trump wants to time travel back to and which one was actually the GREAT time period. Maybe the question we need answered is what does it mean to be great? Alexander the Great was named Great, but why? Was it his education with Aristotle, one of the most highly influential thinkers? Was it because he was a king? No, Alexander was given Greatness as a title because he conquered many lands and decided he was the son of Zeus, which is not biologically possible. So, if being Great is simply asserting that one is extraordinary based on covfefe, does Trump want everyone in America to be extraordinary, eliminating the ordinary that would also eliminate the comparison that allows extraordinary to exist in the first place?
I hope not for I have an idea what makes America great. Like Shakespeare said, “some are born great, some achieve great,” and some have covfefe thrust upon them. 500 years later, sometimes Americans just make up greatness or autocorrect makes it up for them, covfefe’ing their tracks.
When Trump hit “submit” on the tweet that fateful night, he may not have known what creative cascade would follow the addition of one new, unintelligible word. He ignited the creative minds of all. This world may be full of nonsense, and Dr. Seuss would say nonsense wakes up the brain cells.
So, now I feel awake. Like everyone who likes to sleep and snooze, we all must eventually get a wake-up call from reality. Sometimes, we are stuck in a rut. According to the theory of the Black Swan by Nassim Taleb, we need adversity to remind us that a surprising major event that we assumed was impossible can actually occur despite the observance of a pattern of events that insinuate that adversity cannot exist. This is based off of the example of when everyone thought only white swans existed until black swans were discovered in Australia. Everyone assumed they did not exist until one day they were open-minded enough to explore and discover that they did exist.
Trump is like the Black Swan; he proves that anything is possible despite any pattern of behavior that occurred in the past. New beginnings are possible, defying the odds is possible, and most importantly, we need every covfefe moment in our lives to remind us that the future is never set in stone. Now, maybe not everyone was pleased with Trump’s Black Swan moment of being elected as our President, but it is imperative for people to recognize that if they do not want a Black Swan moment to occur, then they need to increase defenses and be more open-minded to the possibilities of the future. They need to be vigilant and oriented towards the search for truth more so than the search for what makes them comfortable.
It is important to remember that we all have agency in our lives; we have the ability to manifest our own destinies. We choose to stay in ruts, and we choose to make healthier patterns. We always have a CHOICE. The moment we believe that there are too many rules to follow and we can only live a life of pleasing others is the moment that we lose our true liberty. Our futures are never safe and covfefe’d by the notion of “everything is going to be fine” and “it will all work out on its own.” It is up to our individual selves to ensure that everything works out the way that we want it to. We have a choice to follow, break, and create new rules.
Covfefe broke the rules of the English language: it was not a word that anyone had heard or read before, and it was used as a euphemism and pun for memes and jokes of all people who had access to the internet. It was material for creativity. It was a Black Swan moment. The status quo always needs to be questioned to evaluate whether or not it is working, and what prompts this questioning are the Black Swans. What will we do with this Black Swan moment? What do you want? Go for it.
