There are many definitions to the word home but the most common is a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household.
The saying goes "Home is where the heart is..." But what happens when you have your heart in many places, and all of those places are home?
Sure when you go on vacation you may use 'home' as a reference to your hotel room or villa but typically the word is used with emotion behind it, referring to a particular special place. For many reasons you may not have grown up in one house or one place and have multiple homes. But there are some other reasons and places you may like to call 'home'.
If you have if you spent summers at camp that location most likely also has special meaning to you. You will, I'm sure, have a lot of childhood memories and friends from this place and it's a personal space where you had independence.
Similarly your summer home might be the place you and your family have been spending summers between school since you can remember. In your mind, this may be just as equally your home.
College is a place I certainly like to call home. It again has special meaning. The place of a new period of life and special friends. Also, like most college students, a majority of my year is spent there. But this does not mean that your home where your family and high school friends are isn't still important.
Study abroad locations become your home for many months or even a year and you learn and understand that place like the back of your hand. Hopefully it holds many happy memories for you and it's lovely to refer to that place as a home.
A temporary move could be your home. Maybe your family moved to another country for a stint, or perhaps you were born somewhere else and moved when you were very little. This can get very confusing when you refer to flying to your family home from your actual home.
The point is that it's okay that you have many places to call home, in fact, it's a great thing. Home is not just a set of coordinates, it’s the people, the coffee shops, the trees, the pavements and the places where you’ve made memories. You are lucky that your life is filled with familiarity in so many special places and that you can feel comfortable in many different locations. Enjoy your homes and keep them special, for all your own reasons, in your heart.
