The Stages Of Returning Home For The Holidays

Whether you're excited or dreading your return, you probably go through these five stages.

Everything you go through when you go home for the holidays.

1. Happy reunions

The moment you're reunited with your family and close friends is pure happiness. It's been months! You've missed them so much, it's great to catch up. You're so excited to spend the long break with them and do all the fun activities you've planned.

2. Going back to your old job

Yes, this is an actual picture of me at work... in July.... the prime of summer. Fortunately, I've only had to dress up once in the costume, I'm usually just a cashier in the store. I'm actually extremely grateful that my manager agreed to give me hours over the break because as a college student, I'm very broke. Many college kids try to work over break because of all the free time on our hands.

3. Boredom

It's common to go home thinking you're going to do so many fun things over break, and maybe you do them all! Even if this is the case, you are likely to be bored at some point over the break. A lot of time is just spent lounging around the house and catching up on sleep.

4. Missing college and your college friends

Being away from your college friends for a whole month is a long time! It's hard to not start to miss them. Sure, it's nice to be home at first, but there's a point in the break where you just can't wait to go back to college and see all your friends again.

5. Getting annoyed by your family

Ya family time is great, but there is such a thing as TOO much family time. The holidays are a crazy time for everyone, and some people get so stressed. If you don't start to get annoyed by some family members after some time, are you even family?? Being back in your house with all of your family being home is a huge adjustment from the dorm life. It's normal to get annoyed by your family.

The holidays are a fun, exciting, hectic time. It's great to have a break from school but before you know it, you'll be wishing you were back.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
