As the seasons change and the cold winds bring us to the end of November, we prepare to return home for the holidays. Whether home is across the country, or just a short train ride away from school, returning home is one of the major perks for the holiday season.
While away at school, the idea of home is always pulling on my heartstrings. Being gone for months means forgetting the little things that make me so happy: Being able to relax, getting away from the city (aka, getting fresh air), and the atmosphere of being with the people I love. I found it is so nice to go and explore the world and study in different places, but I always need a place to call home.
Some of the greatest things about coming home for the holidays include (but are certainly not limited to):
Driving
There is nothing like getting behind the wheel and feeling like you have all your freedom. At least for me, going to school in a city means driving is really hard because all transportation is through the metro. Going home means being able to hop in my car and go anywhere I want, without getting into too much city traffic. With driving comes all the freedom to visit your favorite home spots, filled with childhood memories and favorite restaurants and all of the places you need to hit before going back to school.

Being with your family
The holidays are so special because it gives you the chance to reunite with family that may be spread out. The holidays are the perfect chance to catch up with all relatives. Whether or not you want to answer all of their questions, it is nice to spend the holidays with people you care about and love.
Reuniting with your pet
Dogs are always excited to see you. Even if you’ve left them for three months to go to school, they always welcome you back with the happiest tail-wag ever. I can only assume that all pets get this excited. I think reuniting is probably worth the wait.

Seeing friends
The holidays are a perfect time to see old friends. School is crazy and sometimes it gets hard to keep in touch, so a nice long winter break is the best time to sit with your friends to laugh and reminisce and hear all about their lives.
Not worrying
About the stress of school, grades, or the drama happening on campus. Going home is the best time to sleep late every morning, eat real, non-cafeteria food, and binge-watch an entire season of "Friday Night Lights" on Netflix. It's a great time to de-stress and rejuvenate for the spring semester.
Though missing home is hard, the best thing about being away from home is finding how special it is when you return.
