Whether you’re still studying for your first exam of the week or you’ve just turned in your last one, you’re just about ready to start the summer. It’s a relief knowing you’re free from schoolwork for three or four months, but once you get past that, you’ll realize that you have a lot of free time to fill. You may have work or an internship, but how else can you fill it? Maybe you had one before the school year began, but if not, why not try a new hobby? Here are some good ones worth picking up this summer.
Hiking
Maybe you want to get in shape, but don’t want to be stuck at the gym? Hiking is a fun outdoor activity that you can do either alone or with a companion. New Jersey has many great trails throughout the state, some of which are even less than five miles.
Cooking
While there’s nothing wrong with the occasional cup of ramen, or maybe you missed mom’s pot roast, but cooking is an important skill to have for when you start adulting. Once you get your own place, you’ll be doing all the cooking. Find a class in town—maybe bring your friends!
Sewing
Or anything that involves making or sprucing up clothes and accessories. Sewing is a valuable skill to learn—it might save you from a wardrobe malfunction. Joann’s offers a variety of classes on different types of crafting, which can help you to socialize and meet new people, so check those out.
Writing
Writing is a great way to express yourself and get whatever thoughts off your chest. There are a variety of paths to explore—whether you want to try writing poetry, a short story or a screenplay, the sky is the limit. Everyone has a story, and everyone has their own voice.
Cosplay
Personal bias here, but cosplay is a chance to show off both your creativity and your love for a particular character or series. Cosplay is one of many outlets where the sewing skill could be applied. Show off your work at a convention nearby where you could make friends with other fans!
Photography
Whether traveling abroad or staying home, anyone can have fun with a camera. Take pictures of the little things around you, things you see every day, but in a unique perspective. If nothing else, do it so you can post more on Instagram—just use the sappy quotes and hashtags sparingly.
Even if you don’t feel like you have a lot going on this summer, there’s plenty of stuff to do. Just find something you really enjoy and see where it takes you. While mostly done for leisure, some hobbies can help you in your career (you could build your portfolio) or life in general.
