Hip-hop used to glorify crafty and colorful artists who could write some clever lines while delivering them with some powerful attitude. It's sad to see how that has changed. I think anyone today could get a record deal if they buy beats from a producer and spit their gibberish lines over it. But don't let this make you to upset with the hip-hop crowd because some artists out there have progressed the art and are worth you time more than lean-drinking lizards that throw up over trap beats. Check these artists out if you haven't.
1. Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino brings a heartfelt set of lyrics with a unique delivery and flow. He adds attitude and ruggedness to his songs that captivate your ear.
2. Chance The Rapper
Probably one of the most obnoxious sounding rappers out there, but you'll love it. Whats impressive about Chance other than his unique sound is his independence from labels and how far he was able to grow without corporate help.
3. Action Bronson
This guy used to be a very skilled chef; then he suffered a leg injury and said, "guess I'll start writing songs". Action Bronson is very comical with his raps but is also very clever and quick.
4. R.A. The Rugged Man
Around the time of Biggie and Tupac, R.A. The Rugged Man emerged as a young artist; and when everyone else took the corporate route, R.A. chose to stay small and focus on his art, which he has mastered. R.A. delivers a fierce attitude with an incredible flow. Arguably one of the greatest to do it.
5. A-F-R-O (All Flows Reach Out)
There's not much to say about A-F-R-O other than: listen. (He's only 17!)
6. Aesop Rock
Aesop Rock has the widest range of vocabulary in rap history. His songs are more on the indie side but they are very entertaining to listen to. He knows how to skillfully delivery his rhymes with the combined outlined metaphors and connections. Arguably one of the greatest.
7. Jedi Mind Tricks
This fierce group consists of Vinnie Paz and Stoupe The Enemy of Mankind. Philly natives bring the attitude and the fierceness that today's hip hop lacks immensely.
8. Viro The Virus
The late Viro The Virus was an underground legend. His songs range on the more serious side and will make you feel for sure. R.I.P.
9. OCD: Moosh & Twist
These two young artists are very entertaining to listen to. They have a unique contrast between their two styles, which makes for an unexpected sound. Their shows get wild!
10. Lock Smith
Another more serious rapper is Locksmith. This up and coming rap artist can rap far better than those heard on the radio.
11. Sean Price
The late Sean Price gives you a taste of Old School hip hop. Rough and rugged with the attitude to match. R.I.P.
12. Grind Mode Cypher (Grind Mode Affiliates)
A hidden gem of Rhode Island is the Grind Mode Cypher. They showcase the best of New England. No one who raps in their cypher disappoints.
