Hike Of The Month: Black Rock Mountain State Park

The mountains are calling, and you should totally go.

Hike Of The Month: Black Rock Mountain State Park

There is nothing I love more than spending a day (or week) in the mountains, and that's just what I did on August 21, 2017. We packed the car and left for Black Rock Mountain State Park (at 10:45 p.m.) to catch this year's widely anticipated celestial event, the 2017 total solar eclipse. The park was hosting a viewing event, boasting breathtaking views and plenty of hiking before and after the solar show.

Apart from the life-changing solar eclipse (this is not an exaggeration, if you ever get the chance to experience one... go), there are at least a dozen things to do while in the park's 1,743 acres.

Black Rock Mountain and its surrounding forests host an abundance of trails, winding in and out of dense canopies, crossing exposed stone and curving around the Black Rock Lake.

If you are looking for a satisfying day hike, tackle the 2.2 mile Tennessee Rock trail. The yellow blazed trail winds around through the underbrush, pausing to admire the grandiose views of neighboring Blue Ridge mountains. While it is not a necessity, I would strongly encourage wearing mid-ankle hiking boots for those of you who tend to sprain your ankles. Pack a lunch, take a break.

For hikers looking for something with a little more oomph, consider the backcountry James E. Edmond trail. Be warned, this trail is not for the faint of heart. Carry at least two liters of water, several high calorie snacks and wear boots. Spanning 7.2 miles, the loop trail reveals secret waterfalls, skirts around the Black Rock Lake and summits Lookoff Mountain. Primitive camping is available along the trail (four sites) and require a permit. Be aware of wildlife while on the trail, black bears inhabit the surrounding forest.

In addition to spectacular views and crisp mountain air, the park enjoys another more unique feature. Running through the park is the Eastern Continental Divide: meaning all the rivers running to the west of the divide deposit into the Gulf of Mexico, and rivers east of the line deposit into the Atlantic Ocean!

Whether you are car camping in anticipation for an eclipse, spending the weekend by a campfire or hiking in the wilderness, Black Rock Mountain is the place to go. Carry food and water, wear appropriate attire and as always, leave no trace! I'll see you on the trails!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
