Whether it's babysitting, working at a camp, a day care, an afterschool program, or teaching, we all know working with kids isn't always the easiest. There are some days we want to throw in the towel, and there are some days where it's so rewarding and you never want them to leave. Here's a few of the hardest things about working with kids, and also those sweet little day brighteners.
1. That really awkward moment when one of your kids eat something they shouldn't (glue, a rock, a bug) and you have a slight moment of panic, and yes, have to tell mom or dad.
2. When one of your kids turns off the bathroom light on another student, and you have to reassure your student that there is no ghost in the bathroom.
3. When today's kids no longer believe in cooties and so you have to tell them that they can't date until they're 25 (or at least until they're out of your group or class)
4. When the words "level 1 voice" translates to them as "how loud can we get?!"
5. When people say that working with kids isn't fun.
6. When you've repeated yourself about 10 times, and you are trying to stay at a "happy voice" but internally dying inside.
7. When you can unashamedly discuss how amazing Trolls and Moana are (and boldly sing all the songs from the soundtracks with them).
8. You haven't lived until you've had a dance party with kids. Their quirky dance moves bring your heart an overflowing amount of joy.
9. When you see that smile on their face when they finally get something or they are proud of something they did.
10. When one of your kids moves away or leaves and all your kids are crying, but you're trying to keep your composure when really...
11. When you spend all of your (usually small) paychecks on things for your kids because you want them to have everything.
12. When you're having a really rough day, and one of your kids runs up to you, hugs you, and tells you they love you.
Yeah, some days are hard. Some days talking with parents is tough, or you have a tantrum(or eight) in your group, or a kid throws up. There are rough days. But in the end, it's completely worth it, because they teach you a lot.
They teach you how to be content with little, to befriend everyone, and honestly, their little smiles and big hugs bring a lot of joy to your life. For every hard obstacle working with kids, there's about ten blessings and joys.
