Sometimes, I spend hours browsing Netflix. I wind up in the shadiest corners of the website and find myself watching some of the weirdest movies ever. Once in a blue moon, though, my random week-night selection actually happens to be pretty freaking awesome.
So, without further ado (or whatever that phrase is), I present to you ten weird, but awesome, hidden Netflix gems.
1. Babies
Who doesn't love babies??? I found this movie one night when I was searching through the documentary section of Netflix. It follows the lives of four adorable babies from their first breath to their first birthday. There isn't much dialogue (I mean, what do you expect since the main characters were just born!), but the cultural differences between how parents raise their children in Namibia, Mongolia, Japan, and the United States will definitely keep you entertained. Fair Warning: This film has been known to cause Baby Fever. (Yes, I'm a victim)
2. Hush
Deaf woman fights off a masked, bow-yielding home intruder. I'm so happy I found this movie one Thursday night as I procrastinated on my British Lit paper. The concept is a weird one, but it works. Like the previous selection, there isn't much talking (or sound in general...duh), but who needs strained dialogue when you have this bad-ass chick outsmarting a serial killer? In my opinion, the unnerving silence actually adds to the movie's overall effect, especially if you watch it alone. (Pro-tip: I recommend that you don't.)
3. Can't Buy Me Love
Three words: Young Patrick Dempsey. It was my turn to pick the movie on a Skype date with my boyfriend, and I was feeling lovey-dovey. So, I looked in the romance section. Low and behold, I find the one and only Dr. McDreamy at twenty-one years old. I had to watch it. This movie is cringe-worthy to the max at how dorky Dempsey is, but if you enjoy movies like The Breakfast Club and 10 Things I Hate About You, then you'll for sure like this one.
4. Take Me Home
Road trip? Check. Love story? Check. Real life couple starring as the leads? Check. I found this cheeky movie one day when I was looking for a movie specifically about a road trip. A cheating husband and a dying father prompt Claire to wave down a taxi cab and tell the cabbie to drive. And drive. And drive. This movie is funny and heart-warming and perfect for watching during a rainy afternoon. I just wish I wasn't a broke college student so I could follow Claire's lead.
5. Bella
Woohoo for international finds! This movie follows the story of Nina, a woman who finds out she's pregnant and doesn't think she can keep the baby. I actually watched this movie back in a high school ethics class, so I kind of cheated by putting it on this list. But when I saw it listed on Netflix after browsing through the foreign section, I had to watch it again! It gets pretty emotional, so if you need a good cry, press play.
6. Curve
Don't tell my boyfriend, but I'm madly in love with Julianne Hough. This movie is technically classified as a thriller, but it's more psychological than anything. Hough runs her truck off the road to avoid getting assaulted by a hitchhiker and ends up trapped in the ensuing crash. To make matters worse, the creepy rapist managed to escape the wreckage and keeps going back to the crash site to taunt Hough. It's fast paced and intense and pretty much everything you want in a survival movie. (Spoiler alert: Yes, she has to drink her pee...)
7. White Bird in a Blizzard
Okay, if you're anything like me, you're obsessed with SVU's Christopher Meloni. I came across this movie by simply typing that gorgeous man's name into the Netflix search bar. (Try it, you won't be disappointed.) It's a typical coming-of-age story with a missing person's case thrown in. But nevermind the plot when you have a killer cast. In addition to Meloni, you have Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, and Shiloh Fernandez. Name a better quartet than that... I'll wait.
8. Frailty
Dang, this is a good one. A mentally-unstable dad thinks God is telling him to kill demons that are disguised as humans. And he makes his two young sons help him. The story is told retrospectively in a police station, which makes the twist ending all the more surprising. Plus, Matthew McConaughey stars!!! Hm, we seem to have a theme here with good cast members.
9. Tiger House
Another home invasion movie! Yay! If you can't tell, I like action movies with creepy killers and awesome female leads. This movie actually came up under the "Recommended For You" tab after I watched Hush; props to Netflix. Tiger House is freaking awesome. These bad guys don't wear masks, but there's another twist ending that you'll never see coming (at least I didn't). Plus, it's Kayla Scodelario. Need I say more?
10. One Punch Man
My boyfriend would be very upset if I didn't include this show in my list, so here it is, at the very end. (Sorry, not sorry, Vince.) The first episode of this anime features a half-man, half-crab creature and a kid with a very big butt chin. Not kidding. If you're into anime, I definitely recommend trying this one out; it's funny, has a lot of good action, and the storyline actually has meat to it. Just be mindful, as of right now, Netflix only has twelve episodes for you to enjoy.
So there ya have it: ten Netflix gems that I've stumbled upon one way or another. If this list doesn't suit you, browse the depths of Netflix yourself, and let me know if you find something good!
