Hi I'm Sam: A Q/A College Edition
Personal Photo

Hello loves! My name is Sam Bly and I just joined this amazing writing community! I am a freshman at the University of Iowa. I can’t wait to share my life with you guys! I will be writing once a week, catching everyone up on my life and what I experience here at Iowa.

Before I get into my first post let me tell you a bit about myself. I am originally from Edina, Minnesota. My brother goes to the University, too. Both my parents are badgers, so our family is divided evenly, and it is always fun when the Badgers play the Hawkeyes. So far we’re even. They beat us in football, but we beat them in basketball. I grew up playing sports, so it was really important for me to come to a BIG 10 school. The first time I came to visit my brother at Iowa I fell in love. I love the campus, the students and most importantly the pride. On Iowa. Go Hawks.

While I can’t wait to let you guys into my personal life, my first blog post is in regards to being a college student here at Iowa. I also write for Experience Iowa within the University. The blog I am sharing was intended only for Experience Iowa; however, since I now have the opportunity to write for the Odyssey, too, I wanted to begin with a Q/A I had already created in order to get content up right away! In addition, I have my own blog not associated with the University. Because I write for more than one community, some of my blog posts are similar; yet, others are completely different. Feel free to check out all of my websites, social media, etc.

Enjoy my first blog post!

This past week I had the opportunity to go to Los Angeles and had a lot of free time on my hands. I was thinking about blog posts people would want to read/watch. I had a feeling most people who read my blogs are high school students thinking about Iowa, students at the University, parents, and, of course, my family. With that being said, I think it is important to be as honest as can be about my experience here at Iowa as well as what it’s like being a freshman in college. Down below I have posted a video in which I answer 30 questions regarding all things college. Please take a look and feel free to ask me any additional questions. I love my school with my whole heart and will be as honest as I can when answering questions. If you have more questions my email is sambly@uiowa.edu and my Instagram is samalama16. I am very easy to contact and will reply ASAP!

Have a great day everyone!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake, have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart, no matter how dirty the water may look.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
