"Here Comes A Thought" - Steven Universe

So for those who do not watch Steven Universe, let me break it down. And also, SPOILERS!

Steven Universe is a show on Cartoon Network. The main character, Steven, and his guardians, Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst are the Crystal Gems, protecting the Earth from their own Home World. Steven is half gem/half human unlike the others because he has a human father and a gem mother who gave up her life so he could live. He has a human friend named Connie who learns how to battle from Pearl so she can fight alongside Steven. Gems can also fuse together to create new gems, and because Steven is half human he can fuse with Connie, to create Stevonnie. It might seem like a silly kid show, but it has a lot of meaning and depth to it, especially in its songs.

On August 25 of this year, my favorite song aired in an episode called Mindful Education. In the episode Connie is struggling with the fact that she accidently hurt a kid at school with her training. Garnet, a fused gem, helps them when it turns out Connie's guilt stops Stevonnie from staying fused. Steven also struggles with a lot of things that have been going on in his life lately.

"Here Comes A Thought" is my favorite song because it can be used for so many things and issues we might have in our lives. When we feel unstable or depressed I feel like this song could help in so many ways. It has helped me in that way because I struggle sometimes. Let me show you.

Take a moment to think of just...flexibility, love, and trust.

Take a moment to think of just...flexibility, love, and trust.

When ever I feel particularly sad or depressed I stop and think of my friends or my family. The people that care about me. There are people in the world that give a damn about me and I remember I am not alone.

Here comes a thought that might alarm you

What someone said and how it harmed you

We are human. Even if things are forgiven, they can never be forgotten. And sometimes the things that bothered us or hurt us come back and it leaves you reeling. Sometimes we even become fixated on it and it can't go away no matter how we try sometimes.

Something you did that failed to be charming

Things that you said are suddenly swarming

And sometimes it isn't another persons actions, its our own. That is what Connie struggles with in the episode. That imagery of swarming can be seen as butterflies in the episode. The butterflies reflect not only what other people have done, but what you have done as well, which can be catastrophic to some people. I always second guess my actions or regret things so this really hit home for me. And I use the butterflies in the show as a way to imagine my own struggles.

And, oh...you're losing sight , you're losing touch

All those little things seem to matter so much

That they confuse you

That I might lose you

A lot of the time the thoughts become to loud that we do lose everything else to think about. It becomes destructive to us and we can't see past things. We can lose ourselves in our own depression and guilt. I know sometimes I can't get out of that headspace. We keep it in. But this whole beginning section really helps me focus on what is truly bothering me.

Take a moment, remind yourself

To take a moment and find yourself

Take a moment and ask if yourself

If this is how we fall apart

Then we need to remind ourselves to take a breath. Really think about what is going on. I don't want to fall apart, but I can't bottle things up.

But its not, But its not, But its not, But its not, But its not...

It's okay, It's okay, It's okay, It's okay, It's okay...

You've got nothing, got nothing, got nothing, got nothing to fear...

I'm here. I'm here. I'm here.

The repetition of these lyrics are what a lot of people, including myself, tell themselves to calm down. To bring peace into their mind. It helps to let things go. We can't fester on what is bothering us. We need to talk about what bothers us, so that we can move past it.

The song then takes place in first person, which really sells it. We have heard these lyrics and now its in our own perspective and it helps to center yourself. I go through the whole process, sometimes listening to this song over and over again, because it helps me.

I really think it could help others too.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
