A great way to meet new people in your first few weeks of school is to join clubs or go to events on campus. Though it may be awkward at first, finding a group or club that peaks your interest will help you to get out of your room and make new friends.

2. Find a good balance

Your academics and social life are both important when starting college. However, you don't want too much of one thing. Being too focused on your social life can hurt your academic performance, but being too focused on academics can hurt your social life. Every student has a different balance between the two that works for them. It helps to figure out what works for you early on so you aren't struggling later down the road.

3. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask

If you're struggling in a class, there's no shame in getting a tutor or speaking with the professor. Everyone has their educational weaknesses, but if you start working on yours you'll be able to do better in your classes. Most campuses provide free tutoring services for lower level classes and professors will have office hours in order to help you to succeed.

4. Address roommate issues before they get out of control

Everyone has issues with their roommates from time to time, even if they're your best friend. Talking through your issues, no matter how small, will ensure that both of you have an environment that you feel safe and comfortable in. This is especially important if you're living with a friend. When you let issues build up, it can cause fighting and animosity toward each other, which can lead to the end of a friendship.

5. Take care of your mind and body

Taking care of yourself during college is very important since it can affect every aspect of your life. Things, like sleeping 6-8 hours every night and making sure to stay hydrated, are essential. However, taking care of your mental well being is important as well. Frequent breaks between studying and doing work or taking time to yourself to relax can help you to feel less stressed. These tips are important to having a happy and successful first year of college.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
