While cherries may come to our mind when we think of a summer cherry pie or maybe the perfect topping to our ice cream sundae, we often overlook it as the superfood it is. A dietary staple that ancient Grecians, Romans, and the Chinese indulged in, cherries may be a food we should pay more attention too. Raw cherries come with an array of health benefits such as lowering risk of stroke and reducing inflammation. Their ability to reduce inflammation makes cherries a great fruit to consume after a work out, as it promotes muscle repair. They are also a powerful antioxidant, and strong tool in anti-aging.
In a study with rats, consuming cherries was linked to lower levels of triglycerides, implying they may help an individual maintain a healthy heart, as well as reduce stomach fat. They also contain melatonin- which helps promote healthy sleep.
With cherries, the benefits are seemingly never ending! And the 'cherry on top' of it all is that they are sweet and delicious too!
1) Au Naturel
Delightful just the way they are, a bowl of cherries is a great snack while they're in season (late spring through mid-late summerish).
Aside from their raw form, cherries can also be incorporated into a variety of 'non-dessert' meals. For post-workouts try a cherry-vanilla protein smoothie.
2) Cherry-Vanilla Protein Smoothie
All that's needed is a vanilla protein power (the most healthiest would be non-dairy based), vanilla almond milk, frozen cherries, and optional spinach or kale (you won't taste the greens I promise!).
3) Cherry and Goat Cheese Hors d'oeuvres
Cherries can also be used as an appetizer when paired with goat cheese, brown sugar, thyme, and balsamic vinegar.
4) Chicken With Spicy Cherry Sauce
For an entree, make cherries into a spicy sauce for chicken. Mmmmmm Mmmmm.
Can I get that with a cherry on top?
