My boyfriend just told me that his church is having services tomorrow. Which makes me so angry I can barely contain myself. I'm so sick of Christians trying to monopolize the holiday season.
NEWSFLASH: It's not all about you.
My first issue comes with the definition of Kwanza that comes up when you do a Google search.
A secular festival observed by many African Americans from December 26 to January 1 as a celebration of their cultural heritage and traditional values.
The word "secular" is defined as something that isn't inherently religious. And so, because Kwanza isn't religious and is supposedly only a minor celebration of very important things, it doesn't deserve to be taught about or recognized during the holiday season. People get so hung up on whether or not it's "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." Well, it's Happy Holidays. BECAUSE CHRISTMAS ISN'T THE ONLY HOLIDAY THAT OCCURS AT THIS TIME.
If we're so concerned about our Jewish heritage, why don't we celebrate Chanukah as well? Why don't we recognize its validity as a holiday? Why do we judge and put down those who are trying to give these holidays and celebrations as much attention as they deserve?
Also, Jesus wasn't born in December. Any half-decent pastor will tell you that. Christmas is a combination of several different traditions, most of them pagan, and the church decided to steamroll everything and claim it for themselves.
But that's not very surprising, is it? So don't tell me you're having church on Christmas because "why wouldn't we worship Christ on the day of his birth." Because you're worshipping his conception, which is a sticky subject for Christians who can't even say the word "sex" in church. But hey, who am I to judge? I'm just another Christian. I thought it was our job?
