Pinterest - "Discover recipes, home ideas, style inspiration and other ideas to try." The DIY hub launched in March 2010 and claims to be a social media outlet that inspires people to "go out and do that thing" rather than just a bunch of pictures and dialog, like other social media sites. They have over 800 employees and 175 million active users, including me. Do you have a Pinterest account?
I first heard about Pinterest when my sister was talking about this recipe she found online and how there were dozens just like it made by a whole host of people. I questioned what she was talking about and the rest is history - I'm only kidding, mostly. I created an account with my Facebook login and didn't expect to be that interested in the exclusive DIY club everyone was talking about.
I was confused on how it all worked at first, if I'm being honest. I had to "create a board" to "pin" that on, huh? Ah, so this was like sitting in my room with a cork board, tacks and a whole pile of magazines. That appealed to me because I love doing that, cutting things from magazines and doing stuff with the clippings.
However, it was always difficult to contain the tiny clippings of pillows I might want when I'm older or the inspirational quotes typed out in appealing bright colored fonts. So I was on board with a place to keep all my "pins" that didn't involve 18 Ziplock baggies smashed together in a folder or splayed across my desk.
Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for the life-sucking Pinterest was going to provide me with. I thought I could look from time to time when I got bored or just wanted something fun to do and it wouldn't be a big deal. Boy, I was wrong. I would get on "just for fun" and spend hours looking through recipes I probably wasn't ever going to make or rooms I wished I had to money to mimic the decor of.
There were crafts I wanted to run out and try immediately and I updated my Facebook status with a new inspirational quote almost daily. I downloaded the app on my phone and I was looking all the time. Hours would go by and I had no idea. I would annoy my husband with, "Look at this recipe!" or "We should totally make this for our house!" It was seriously a problem. And nine times out of ten, I wasn't actually following through with all the DIY things I had pinned.
to get sucked into the never-ending hole that is Pinterest. It's such a great site and has so much to offer. So I can't say I blame you if you, too, have been sucked down the rabbit hole. Just remember to make time for other things and follow through with at least some of the projectsyou thought you might make.
