Hate-Watching, It's a Thing

According to Urban Dictionary, "hate-watching is when the pleasure you get out of watching something comes from your hatred of it". In other words, you watch because you love to hate it.

The show draws you in, probably with a strong first season, attractive actors, romantic storyline, maybe some clever one-liners. But before you know, you find yourself wondering why you started the show in the first place. You compare each new episode with a better one from the past. You look forward to the next commercial so you can check social media, text you friend back or really anything to take your mind of the amount of time you are wasting watching this horrible excuse for a show. Yet with all of that in mind, you secretly search for people who watch the same show to compare notes and share theories: they say the first step to friendship is hating the same things.

Here are a few of the best worst shows you'll love to hate-watch.

1. "Pretty Little Liars"

I could go on and on and ON about this show (and I probably will in a future post). We all tuned in back in 2010 after the intriguing promo for the show's first episode. It was new, it was exciting it was different from anything ABC family had done before. But now, here we are 6 seasons later and just as lost as we were season 1. The plot holes are endless. The "big reveAl" episodes are nothing but disappointing, creating new questions that will probably never be answered. The main characters have been in their senior year of high school for three seasons. Every episode leaves us more and more confused. Yet, without fail every Tuesday night we turn back in hoping maybe this episode will be better, only to be let down all over again.

2. "Scandal"

Oh Shonda, we questioned you when you killed off (spoiler alert) McDreamy, but this? "Scandal" has gone downhill, fast. For starters, it just isn't believable anymore. Will Olivia and Fitz get their happily ever after and their "jam" (actually gagging)? Why do I still care? Also, all the characters you loved in the beginning (not naming any names) you will grow to HATE by the current season. The biggest scenes in any episode, as the show progresses, invoke some serious eye rolls. I find myself wondering why I'm still watching - key word being "still".

3. "American Horror Story"

If you ask me, I lost all faith in this show when they killed (spoiler alert) Ma Petite in the Circus season. I mean come on, how adorable is she.

But when I saw Lady GaGa was going to star in this season, I wanted to give it another chance. Big. Mistake. Where was the plot? Were the vampires dead or alive? Every episode raised more questions than answers. Why did the lead character's wife have a hairstyle from the 1700's? It felt like the writers were trying to make things up as they went along. Yet, every Wednesday night I found myself watching.

All three of these shows will get you started on the hate-watching bandwagon. And they are all conveniently on Netflix.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
