So this week I went to go see "Deadpool" starring Ryan Reynolds and I just want to say it was fucking amazing. OK, before I go any further I just would like to say that I have always been a big Deadpool fan ever since I was younger. I remember seeing Deadpool for the first time in the Marvel animated movie “Wolverine vs. Hulk." Although he only had a minor role in it I thought he was hilarious. Then I started to see him even more in Marvel video games and that’s when I decided to finally get into the comics. The cool thing I liked about Deadpool is that he wasn’t a goody two shoes hero like Captain America or Superman and he wasn’t a bad guy like Green Goblin or The Joker. He's sort of well… both. Deadpool only did the right thing when he felt like it, but most of the other times he was an asshole which made me just love his character. I think that’s what made his character so likable since he was so different than your traditional superhero when he first came out. But anyway since "Deadpool" was rated R and has been a success at the box office for the last few weeks, the question that a lot of the fans have been asking is should more comic book movies be rated R?
Now look the inner nerd in me wants to say hell yeah! Let’s make all comic book movies that come out rated R so they can be as cool as "Deadpool"! But as I thought about it, I realized that it wouldn’t be that simple. Okay I’ll admit I think making "Deadpool" rated R was a smart move on Marvel’s part, but that’s because the character of the movie was Deadpool. If anyone has read the comics, then they know that Deadpool is a vulgar ass character. Not only does he swear like a sailor, but also has one of the most perverted senses of humor than any other comic book character. If Marvel would have made that movie PG-13 then they would have toned his character down (just like they did with Wolverine but that’s beside the point). Sure, I would like to see some rated R comic book movies, but only for dark superheroes like Batman or Daredevil. I don’t want to see a rated R Spider-Man or Superman movie. It just wouldn’t fit their characters. But one good thing about the success of "Deadpool" is that it has got a lot of people thinking of what it would be like to have movies of that style, which in my opinion is a great idea. Peace.
