The video unveiling comes with little surprise with Oct. 5th marking the 53rd anniversary of the theatrical release of the first Bond film “Dr. No” naming the date Global James Bond Day.
Smith collaborated with Jimmy Napes, his songwriter for Grammy-winning track “Stay With Me.”
"I tried to put myself in the shoes of Bond," the singer told NPR. "My music is a diary and it's a recap of my life, and I wanted to bring that kind of honesty. In the lyrics … I wanted a touch of vulnerability from Bond, where you see into his heart a little bit.”
The video, directed by Luke Monaghan features Smith in a stunning black suit that would be sure to gain approval from Bond himself. Smith is filmed flawlessly singing the easing ballad in Rome, in the same locations that Spectre was shot.
Along with Smith, the video audience is teased with short scenes from the movie that show Daniel Craig alongside his two Bond girls, Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux.
The track, “Writing’s on the Wall” soared to the top of the U.K.’s Official Top 100 Singles Chart, finding a comfortable spot at No. 1. This makes it the first ever James Bond theme song to top the charts.
“It was such an honor to be asked to write and record 'Writing’s on the Wall,' and it’s incredible that it’s become the first Number 1 Bond theme song,” Smith told Official Charts. “It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara [Broccoli] and Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy. I couldn’t have done this without my fans -- this is a special moment I’ll never forget.”
Rolling Stone reported that Smith is also the first British male singer to sing a Bond theme song since 1965 when Tom Jones helped out with “Thunderball.”
With Adele having received a Grammy for her Bond theme song in 2013, one can only hope that with this stunning video Smith is just as fortunate. This would add a fifth shiny, gold gramophone to his glittering bookshelf.
Spectre will come out in theaters Nov. 6.
