Ahhhhh yes, it’s that time of year ladies. The time when suddenly it seems like everyone is jumping head-over-heels into relationships. Between formals, the cuddle weather, and the sappiest holiday of the year, you may think it’s urgent and of the utmost importance to just throw yourself into the first thing that comes along. But honestly, I think Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love in every aspect of your life!
Shout out to your parents!. They put up with you for about 18 years; they may have wanted to ring your neck here and there but hey, we’ve all made it to this point. Shout out to all the people in your life who actually like being around you. All of the people who love you just the way you are! The people who wait to eat lunch with you or ride the bus with you. The people who pick out your outfits and go out to eat with you the next morning even though you’re in the outfit from last night that they picked out. The ones who hold you and let you cry and actually care about what you have to say.
Last but certainly not least, love yourself on Valentine’s Day. You obviously should appreciate yourself all 365 days out of the year but you especially need to around this time of year. Don’t get down and out about not having a beau because as we all know they’re not always all that they’re cracked up to be. Don’t glorify a guy who only talks to you when he needs something and/or mysteriously texts when only when it’s dark outside.
Sometimes fate gives us breaks in our love life so we can reexamine how we’ve acted in the past so we can move forward with the future, and although it can at times be discouraging, it isn’t anything to be ashamed of! Don’t lower yourself to be treated like a dog, don’t respond to texts along the lines of “come over” just so you aren't chilly on a night late in winter! You are a beautiful lady with a face like sunshine; you should put all your energy into bettering yourself and appreciating the ones around you who always love you and here are some quotes to build up your single woman self esteem and to remind yourself that maybe it should be renamed: Galentine’s Day.
“The flower doesn’t dream of the bee, it blossoms and the bee comes.” – Mark Nepo
“Invest in people who invest in you.” – The Alison Show
“Spread love everywhere you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” – Mother Teresa
“The woman who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual on the planet.” – Mohadesa Najumi
“I got my own back.” – Maya Angelou
“Hearts are wild creatures, that’s why our ribs are cages.”- Unknown
“Though she be but little, she is fierce.” – William Shakespeare
“How beautiful it is to stay silent when someone expects you to be enraged.” – Unknown
“The best people possess a feeling for a beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” – Ernest Hemingway
“Until you get comfortable with being alone, you’ll never know if you’re choosing someone out of love or loneliness.” – Mandy Hale
“Follow your heart, but take your brain with you.” – Unknown
So read those through a few times, buy yourself a little something, and be sure to focus on all of the things in life that you are fortunate to have. Don’t spend this Valentine’s Day feeling sorry for yourself and reaching out to anyone who throws you the slightest ounce of attention and a little spank on the booty. Don’t lower yourself to their level, because you’re only going to wake up with regret and the feeling of being lonely but in the presence of others.
“You is kind. You is smart. You is important.” And don’t you forget it! Happy Galentine’s Day!
