We read tons of articles about social distancing, but what about our dogs? The most difficult part about social distancing with your dogs, is that they really don't understand what is happening... They don't get why walks have slowed down, why you are always home (although I'm sure that is their favorite part!), or why there is more tension in the house than usual. If you are fortunate enough to have a dog for company during these tough times, and want to make sure to keep them wagging their tails, then here are the 3 best strategies I have learned at this time:
Walks, Walks, Walks
Whether it is in your backyard, the neighborhood, or even the local park (if you don't have the first two)… they will enjoy either way! Let them run around and get the fresh air because being cooped up in the house won't do them, or you, any good. Just remember - social distancing means keeping your space, so do your best to only go to a place where it will be just you and your dog.
More Play Time
It may be harder to get dogs socializing with other dogs during this time. That's where we have to step in to make sure they are playing fetch and being just as active as a normal day. Throw the frisbee around, play catch with their favorite toy, or, if your dog is anything like mine… just squeak his toy and that will be enough to get him up and playing!
A Little Bit of Extra Love
Because all dogs are good dogs, and all good dogs always deserve an extra pet. Something as simple as walking by them while they are in their beds and giving them extra attention, or if they are laying on the couch next to you, give them a quick belly rub. They deserve it!
I know it is a messy world out there right now and we are seeing so many articles about social distancing, politics, and the economy, but we have to remember to remain positive and not to neglect our pets during these times. After all, as the saying goes, "they might only be part of your life, but to them, you are their whole life".
Be happy, stay positive, and always remember: all good things happen in 3's. Best, Queen Vi.
