Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, I’m sure you can appreciate a good Christmas song. They’re jolly and festive and, regardless, all the stores are playing them. Here are 14 songs that I consider to be hands down the best Christmas songs:
- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - This 1957 Frank Sinatra classic is one you will be bound to hear during the holiday season, whether sung by Sinatra or by other artists, from Bette Midler to Babyface to Sam Smith, who frequently cover this song.
- Rockin Around the Christmas Tree - Though this is another famous Christmas tune, many are unfamiliar that this song was originally sung by Brenda Lee at a mere 13 years of age. Most recently covered by Miley Cyrus in 2011, this holiday tune is one sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
- Jingle Bell Rock - Whether you know this tune as the Bobby Helms' original or as the "Christmas song" from Mean Girls, this Christmas song has remained as one of America's most famous Christmas songs (and for good reason too).
- All I Want for Christmas Is YouAll I Want for Christmas is You - Boasting 156 million views on Youtube, this is one of my favorite Christmas tunes to listen to during the holiday season. Who doesn't love a good Mariah Carey song, both sassy and festive?
- Feliz Navidad - This Christmas tune feats a simple Spanish chorus ("Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad" meaning "Merry Christmas, a prosperous year and happiness") and American verses, and has become a holiday classic nationally and internationally.
- Sleigh Ride - "Just hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing / Ring ting tingle-ing too". This familiar tune is one sure to get you singing along in Christmas spirit.
- It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Another Christmas favorite, this Andy Williams classic is one unforgettable melody that sings of the season's festive decorations, marshmallows roasting and caroling out in the snow - easily the most wonderful time of the year.
- Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - This Christmas carol was written by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley founder of the Methodist church, in 1739. However, since its initial composition, the melody has been recomposed into more festive and popular tunes. My favorite cover of this song is by Amy Grant, from her 1983 "A Christmas Album".
- O Come All Ye Faithful - Originally written in Latin as Adeste Fideles, and bearing appearance in years as early as the mid-1600s, this popular Christmas hymn is one of my favorites.
- Last Christmas - Though this tune was first recorded by Wham! in their 1986 album "Music From Another Heaven", you're probably more familiar with the Taylor Swift cover of this song (my personal favorite too).
- The Christmas Song - This is a classic Christmas song written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé, and according to Broadcast Music Inc, is the most-performed Christmas song (I don't doubt it).
- Holly Jolly Christmas - I love Burl Ives' cover of this popular Christmas melody - there's a good chance that you've heard his cover of this song and many other popular Christmas tunes from his 1965 "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" album.
- 12 Days of Christmas - Another one of my favorites and one to play and hear often during the holiday season, this cumulative song is one carol sure to get you in the festive spirit of the season.
- Frosty the Snowman - Who didn't grow up singing this song, naming their snowmans "Frosty", or at least hearing this popular melody every December? This popular tune is one that makes my "best Christmas songs" list because of the fun fictional tale it recounts, its seasonal spirit, and universality among ages.
Listen to one or all of these and I guarantee you'll be full of Christmas spirit in no time. Happy holidays!
