I had the privilege to see "Hamilton," the broadway musical, this past weekend. For almost an entire year, all I have been hearing how incredible this musical is, I have been hearing my best friends sing the songs constantly, and the entire world has seemingly flipped upside because of this show. The hype behind the show is intense and overwhelming. And, I can confirm, this show deserves the hype.
I have always loved going to the theater. I thank my parents for introducing it to me as a young girl. I also was lucky enough to have many thespians as friends, and they introduced me to things I wouldn't know about otherwise when it comes to the theater world. Because of this, I have been lucky enough to see many plays and musicals during my 20 years. But, this past weekend, I saw the musical that truly changed everything.
"Hamilton" was absolutely beautiful. It was engaging, funny, heartwarming, and just a masterpiece. It not only made me insanely jealous of Lin-Manuel Miranda's brain, but I feel like a lucky person to have witnessed this show. The music has yet to leave my head days later. I try to fall asleep at night, and the words of songs are playing in my head and I can't focus on a single thing. But, I don't mind, because the songs are so fun and upbeat. It does keep me from sleeping, though...worth it.
On top of the music, the staging of "Hamilton" was unlike any other show I had seen. It was so simple, yet it was perfect as it told the entire story so beautifully. The words of the songs and the incredible performance from the actors filled the stage with their presence so immensely, that it took control over everything. It was truly an experience seeing this come to life.
Lin-Manuel Miranda made a masterpiece out of a historical story that most people these days would only read in a textbook. He made Alexander Hamilton relevant again, but in the best way possible. A founding father, rapping, singing, dancing, but also teaching us the history of his life. Lin- Manuel Miranda made his story relatable, and made me realize how absolutely interesting Alexander Hamilton's life was. This is something I would have never appreciated before because everything and anything I had read about him was for a class.
"Hamilton" was a work of art, it was an experience sitting there and watching this. I was not only watching a piece of history unfold in a story in front of me, I felt like I was watching history just by the means of this musical being out there in the public. It is so famous now, and sometimes with that, things can get tired, or overdone, but this show just couldn't get there simply because of its pure brilliance. I will always remember the afternoon I saw "Hamilton."
