If you’re anything like me, you will not be seeing the new "IT" movie; in fact, you cover your eyes every time the commercial interrupts your "Friends" re-runs. I don’t do scary movies. At all. I hate all things horror and have to run away from my friends every Halloween when they try to make me watch "Friday the 13th." Nope, not going to happen. I’m a weenie when it comes to the horror film genre, a scaredy-cat, and I’m not afraid to admit it. I’ve compiled a list of the must-watch Halloween movies for the feint-of-heart, in increasing scariness order.
1. "Mean Girls" (2004)
Hey, there’s a Halloween party in it. If you’re one of the 10 people on Earth who hasn’t seen "Mean Girls," it’s not scary, It's a really great movie with a vague reaching tie-in to Halloween.
2. "The Princess and the Frog" (2009)
Call me crazy, but the villain of this Disney film, Dr. Facilier, is terrifying.
3. "Halloweentown" (1998)
This is a perfect Halloween movie to watch with younger siblings. Originally airing on Disney Channel, its runtime falls at just under an hour and a half. Be warned, it is cheesy as hell.
4. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993)
A classic for both Halloween and Christmas, you can watch it early if you’re ready for winter or wait a month for a late Halloween love. If you’ve never seen it, give it a try!
5. "Young Frankenstein" (1974)
This black and white classic (yes, they had color in the 70s, but this one’s in black and white) is a horror parody and falls on many lists as one of the top 50 funniest movies ever made.
6. "Casper" and "Casper Meets Wendy" (199/1998)
Ghosts are real, and they’re adorable. Hijinks ensue when a father and daughter move into a spooky old haunted house. "Casper" is a must see and, ya know, "Casper Meets Wendy" is okay…
7. "The Addams Family" (1991) and "Addams Family Values" (1993)
I recently re-watched "The Addams Family," and it’s one of the greatest movies ever. Morticia and Gomez are #relationshipgoals and they have this parenting thing down too. The sass in this movie is real. Its sequel is just as awesome. Pair these two with "Beetlejuice" (#11 below), and you have a solid Halloween movie line-up. pic)
8. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001)
I can’t make a list without Harry Potter. When this movie first came out, Voldemort’s face poking out of the back of Quirrell’s skull was extremely creepy. I personally find any excuse to re-watch "Harry Potter" movies, but this movie’s Halloween feast, troll battle, night walks in the dark and final Voldemort battle make this a Halloween must for scaredy-cats.
9. "Hocus Pocus" (1993)
This comedy, horror and fantasy mash-up features three evil witch sisters who must be stopped!
10. "Practical Magic" (1998)
A Halloween rom-com with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman playing sister witches who must accept their powers and battle a family curse.
11. "Beetlejuice" (1988)
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Say his name three times and he appears. This one’s a comedy-horror where the ghosts are the good guys.
12. "Warm Bodies" (2013)
Zombies; a love story. "Warm Bodies" is a horror-esque romantic comedy about a zombie falling in love with a non-dead girl, this movie is freaking adorable. There are still zombies though, so while I wouldn’t call this movie scary, there may be a few jump moments.
13. "Shaun of the Dead" (2004)
A love story with zombies. This is one of my all-time favorite movies I watch every Halloween. This is solidly in the comedy horror genre with a romantic plotline. To appreciate this, you’ll need a fondness for British humor. Also, head’s up, there’s a nasty bloody gory scene at the very end. I have to look away.
14. "Carrie"(1976/2013)
I’ve actually never seen the original "Carrie," but I have read Stephen King’s work and seen the re-make. This is totally creepy, and definitely, a movie when you root for Carrie, despite the murdering.
15. "The Shining" (1980)
Another Stephen King classic, "The Shining," still gives me the heeby-jeebies. For us scaredy-cats, you may need to follow this one with a less-scary option from above, like "Mean Girls" or "Casper."
16. "Underworld" Series (2003/2006/2009/2012/2016)
An awesome fantasy-action series about vampires and werewolves. The movies include many dark corners for monsters to jump out of, which puts you on the edge-of-your-seat. There are five movies in the franchise, so you can occupy a full day to watching movies!
17. "Resident Evil" Series
(2002/2004/2007/2010/2012/2016)
"Resident Evil" is an action series about a zombie apocalypse with a badass female lead. The movie contains gore and some solid jump moments. Plan on a palate cleanser before bed. (Pic)
18. "I am Legend" (2007)
I’m not going to lie, this is an amazing movie, but it has some really sad moments, too. If you haven’t seen it, I don’t want to spoil it, but there is a certain scene I have to fast forward through because it’s too sad. This is another zombie apocalypse movie, but it has a completely different feel from any other zombie apocalypse I’ve ever read about or seen in a movie.
