I saw the street I grew up in in the news

Being from Haiti and watching the Hurricane Matthew catastrophe on the news

I saw the street I grew up in in the news

The picture above is down the street from the house that I grew up. In the same street lives my extended family. In that same street, there is a woman that makes my favorite empanadas and her name is Lirose. I was just sitting in the porch of one of these houses while visiting Haiti just a few months ago.

If you look really close in the picture, you would see the corner of the street where my dad caught me talking to a guy that I was not suppose to talk to. The picture is not big enough for you to see my best friend house, where I spend most of my time when I am in Haiti. This where I go when the sun it's too hot while we retell each others stories about the past.

That same street is also used as a soccer field on summers, where children improvised if they do not have the right equipment to play. That same street is where most of my childhood friends lives.

I moved to the US in August 2008, I was 11 years old. Whenever I tried to explain the location of Haiti, people would be confused. They could not figure out if Haiti was an island or somewhere in Africa. Before the earthquake in 2010, a lot of people was not familiar with Haiti. In other words,no one cared.

Here we are six years later, having deja vu, and the country that everyone love to feel bad for and not do anything about is back in the news. This time it is even closer to home, the small town that I was born and raised in has been completely destroyed.

You would think that after the earthquake where so many people lost their lives, Haitian governments would have a plan in place if another disaster occur?

Where were people supposed to go? What are they suppose to eat? Who is going to help?

Haitian government officials needs to stop waiting on America to come save them and starts taking care of their people without a Natural disaster happening.

Those places that have such a special place in my heart are no longer standing. They are ruined and came crashing down on that fateful night. Whatever is left is in shambles. The vibrant place that I grew up is no longer standing strong

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
