Hair can be as changing as the seasons, for some. For me personally, I’ve gone through a plethora of hairstyles over the years. In old pictures my hair can be used to determine my emotional mind state, and my age too. Here are five of my most defining hairstyles:
1. The press and curl
Pressed hair for me is a distant memory far far in the past. This mostly symbolizes Camille age 12 to 14, a girl still trying to figure out who she is and struggling to fit in with the crowd. Straight hair was a way to blend in and not draw any negative attention towards myself. At the time I thrived on it, and used my hair as my defining feature.
2. The struggling to go natural
Here you have a girl who obviously has no clue what she’s doing with her hair. Before she knew of big chops and co-washes, Camille age 15-16 just thought that going natural meant no longer straightening her hair. As a result we have this heat damaged not quite curly not quite straight mess.
3. The “I just can’t care anymore bun”
Everybody has that phase in their life where they just accept that their hair isn’t going to do what they want it to do. Mine lasted an embarrassingly long amount of time, and resulted in this completely flavorless hairstyle above. I called this the struggle bun, and to be honest this is a pretty decent picture of it. If this is it at its best, you can only imagine it at it’s worst. Most days it could be a horrible mess, one that I wasn’t proud of sporting. Camille age 16-19, three whole years had mad self-esteem issues I’m not ashamed to admit, and hair and style suffered immensely because of it.
4. The successfully natural
After years of struggling with my hair breaking off, growing out just to break off again; Dry, brittle, and weirdly straight in some sections, Camille 20-present has finally mastered the natural look. This represents a more confident me, a woman who isn’t afraid to stand out in a crowd. Special shout out to the Shea Moisture line of hair products for keeping my hair pleasantly styled.
5. The “Havana Twists”
The love for the fro is definitely strong now, but hey I need a break every once in a while! And no you don’t get to comment unless you’ve stayed up for two extra hours in one night styling your hair in tiny little braids to master the perfect braid out the next morning. Havana twists are the perfect hairstyle for cold weather when you don’t have the luxury of wash and go’s under your belt. They’re also great for protecting your ends from the harsh winter weather.
