There is a lot of pressure to decide on your major in college right from the start. Parents, teachers, and friends all try to have a say in what they think you should do with your life. Before you settle on what you think is best, be sure to think about all of the following.
1. What jobs are available in this field?
Believe me when I say that every major has job prospects, so don't worry about that. What you should really be thinking about is if they're jobs you're interested in. I love learning about history, but being a history teacher, working at a museum, or being a historian are not jobs that I can see myself pursing. Make sure that your interest in a field does not overpower the reality of what you want to do with your life.
2. Who is telling you to do this?
Are you taking all of these business classes because you want to work in the industry, or because your dad majored in business and says that it is what you should do, too. You're the only person who is going to have to live with your choice, so be happy with the one you make.
3. Is it something you're good at?
Let's face it, doing things we aren't good at isn't really fun for anyone. We all like some things just for fun even if we have no talent for them whatsoever. If you are not good at math, don't become an engineer, it just isn't logical.
4. Are you rushing?
I know that there is tons of pressure to pick a major at 17 years old, but it is okay if you don't know right away. Take a few courses in different areas in order to find your real passion. It's okay to change your mind along the way. You'll be much happier in the long run.
5. Do you love it?
If you don't absolutely love your major not only will the next 4 years be a drag, but you could be miserable for the rest of your life.
Picking a major can be scary, so make sure you think it through before you settle on something you don't love and will regret later.
