It’s that time of year again, and I'm not talking about the holiday season. It’s time to start getting your tickets for Forecastle. The music and arts festival takes place in Louisville, Kentucky on July 15 through 17, and tickets are currently on sale. As someone who has attended the festival four years in a row, here is everything you need to know to make the most of your Forecastle experience.
1. Buy a weekend pass
Don’t settle for just a one day ticket, unless you already know you have strict obligations. Chances are, there will be so many bands you want to see on different days (and in some cases some bands you might want to see will be playing at the same time, which leads to extremely difficult decision making). As long as both your bank account and your personal life can handle it, just go all in. Remember that the earlier you get your tickets, the cheaper they are. Also, the pre-sale is already sold-out, so they will probably go fast!
2. If you live nearby, don't pay for lodging
Going home after the show will save you the extra cost of a hotel room. So find a designated driver or take an Uber home. Yes, the Uber is an extra expense in itself, but it’s a better alternative to shelling out over $100 for a hotel room.
3. See new bands
Of course, most of the time, concerts are more fun when you’re a fan of the artist. However, if you only stick to seeing bands you know, you’ll miss out on finding new artists to listen to. An opportunity to experience live music should never be passed up. Who knows, an artist you had previously never heard of might even end up becoming your favorite.
4. Visit the Bourbon Lounge
Kentucky is famous for its bourbon, so whether you love the drink or want to experience some of Kentucky’s finest, visit the bourbon lounge and take a break from the summer heat (it’s air conditioned).
5. But don't drink too much bourbon
As you spend hours standing in large crowds with the sun beating down, dehydration is more likely to occur, and alcohol only increases that chance. In addition to the danger, if you pass out, it means that you’ll miss out on the rest of the festival that day. Make use of the free water stations to avoid this!
6. Don't ruin the experience for others
There are always people at shows who are more there for the social aspect of the festival (to get drunk or high) than to actually experience the music. Be respectful of others in the crowd. There will always be people who push past you to get a better view; just roll with it and have a good time.
7. Pack sunscreen, blankets, and a camelback or water bottle
You will be hot and tired. You will be glad you brought these things.
8. Wear something you feel comfortable in
Festival style is becoming more and more popular, but make sure that you wear something you feel comfortable in and that won’t make you sweat any more than you have to.
9. Dance and sing along
You came to this festival to have fun. Don’t be afraid to dance and sing along to your favorite bands. If you don’t already do this at concerts, are you sure you even like music?
If you choose to get on board, I’ll see you there!
