To The Group Project Slacker, You Had One Job

More hands make light work, if only you knew that.

I’m that person who would rather do a whole project alone than get matched up with strangers, 100%.

Now if I get to pick my group, I’m a little more okay with it. Still, I don't love the idea of group work, I'll be honest. Sometimes people just don't work well together, which is fine.

In one of my senior capstone classes, we got to pick our groups and I love mine. But in my online class where we got put into groups, it's a completely different experience. There is one person in the group who does their stuff when I ask, and they happened to be in my other group, so they aren't the problem. A couple of the other members tend to work their way in the day it's due.

I’m usually a delegator. I’m the person who will send out the first email or group text. I’ll say “Okay, you do this, you do that and I’ll do this.” I have no problem helping you out when you have a question or sending you pictures of the chapter when you don't have the book. Doesn’t seem too bad, right?

Wrong. I’ve had people question me on due dates, ignore my text messages, and tell me they “contributed to the Google Doc” but it’s not there? Or they tell me they sent an email, but I never got it. Nothing is worse than a lame excuse. Honestly, it's 2017! Your contribution doesn't show up and your email doesn't get delivered. I’ve heard on the day it’s due, “I have class all day until 8. I don't know when I’ll have time.”

JOIN THE CLUB. So do I.

I think you've had plenty of time since I reminded everyone, a week before it was due. But hey, maybe it’s me. Honestly, probably not. I give everyone a fair shot for the first assignment. Sure, it’s new and we’re not used to it yet. We’re just getting out of the summer funk.

But by the third assignment, if you can’t do it in a timely manner, what are you doing? If I was the slacker, I would expect my name to be left off the assignment and the professor told me that I didn't participate.

I don’t ask for much, but you truly had one job. Do your part. Contribute to the Google Doc by Sunday night. Hey, I’ll even let you have until Monday morning. I have a break from 2-5 P.M., which is usually when I put everything together. But when I say before 5 P.M., I mean 5 P.M.

To all you people reading this thinking "Wow, that's me", change that. To all the people out there who do your part, thank you. You are the real MVPs.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
