Have you ever went to the movie theatre and expected a movie to be okay, but then be blown away? Well, this has recently happened to me over Christmas break when I made my entire family watch "The Greatest Showman". Now at first, I did not tell them that it was a musical because I knew they would back out. What I did tell them was that it had a lot of great reviews from my friends and that I had been dying to see it. They all surprisingly agreed to see it with me!
The theatre was packed out with people as the movie began. The entire movie was slam pack full of music, dancing and incredible acting. The star-studded cast of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Keala Settle and so many more made this movie exceed my expectations. This roller-coaster of a movie takes you through the life of P.T. Barnum who created what is now known as the circus. Love, friendship, comedy, heartbreak, failures and accomplishments are some of the things that this movie touches on.
I think choosing to portray this story through song and dance was such an incredible choice for the producers because it really showcases the imaginative side of the entire story. Every lyric in every song means something. Whether it is to prove a point, convey a message, or assist with the overall plot it has meaning behind it. Such as in the anthem of the movie "This Is Me", my personal favorite, the bearded woman is saying that she is going to be herself no matter what anyone else thinks.
We can sometimes find ourselves trying to blend into society and hating what makes us different. This movie tells us to embrace it. In this particular film, I constantly found myself listening to every word because I knew of its importance. The tunes were rather catchy too, and it was just great for keeping my attention. My little sister and I, at several points during the movie, were clapping our hands and literally jumping out of our seats to dance. I have had the entire soundtrack on repeat ever since seeing the movie (which I have now officially seen twice).
I love how joyful the movie was as well. It has been so long since I have seen a movie that wasn't violent or dark. It was nice to see a movie that was a bit more upbeat and positive. The originality of the entire movie was great too. Taking a true story about something that we all know about, and showing us what the origin story of the circus via a musical format was stupendous.
This is an incredible movie for all types of people. You will find yourself humming these tunes for the rest of the year and wanting to see this soon to be classic over and over again.
