You Only Get So Many Great Days, Don't Lose Them To Mountains Of Work

If you never stop to enjoy the life you're building, what's the point?

You Only Get So Many Great Days, Don't Lose Them To Mountains Of Work

Finals are coming up fast, and if you're anything like me you're feeling a little buried in work right now. It's neverending. There's work for clubs, work for classes, work for summer jobs, work for campus jobs, and it feels like there's so much to do and no time left for any of.

On top of all of the work, fun events are just starting to ramp up. Particularly if you live in New England, this weekend was one of the first that really felt like spring. With spring comes concerts, festivals, sunsets, hiking, and all kinds of fun outdoor activities. It's too easy to look at the mountain of responsibilities and let it run your life.

I'm here to remind you that you also need to live a little.

Think about everything you're working towards. If you're a college student, you're probably working your way to a degree so you can get a job. You're probably working towards that job either because it's something you love, or because it will help you financially support the things and people you love.

So answer me this, if you never stop to enjoy the life you're building, what's the point of any of it?

Just because you're are working towards a future full of what you love, doesn't mean you should do less of what you love now. Even more than the things you love, you should put time into anything and everything that brings you joy.

Right now we live in a world where every time you turn on the TV, or look at your phone, you're bombarded with negativity, violence, and politics. Every moment you spend living life is one less moment spent on the same negative bullsh*t that is everywhere.

I had an amazing day today, and I can tell you exactly why that is. I put down my phone, I ignored the pile of homework in my room, I decided not to care what anybody thought of me, and I acted on a whim.

Let me elaborate. When I left my dorm this morning, there was music playing outside and people were starting to set up camp for a day of music, dancing, and sunshine. I had a pile of work and two meetings to go to, so regrettably, I walked past it all and ran around campus for most of the day.

After my meetings had finished for the day, my friend Emily and I took a bus back to our dorm to find all the festivities still in progress. We were tired and had a bunch of work to do, but we put our bags down and went back outside on a total whim.

We spent two and a half hours outside. We danced, we sang, and we soaked in the sun. We saw old friends and made new friends. I glanced at my phone a few times, but not once did I check social media or scroll aimlessly on my phone.

I didn't think about the mountain of work waiting for me. I didn't care what anybody thought of my dancing. I didn't filter every word that came out of my mouth. I just hung out, and I couldn't have been happier.

I'm a huge fan of the hustle. Find me working my butt off all day, every day. I'm a dreamer and I work damn hard to make those dreams come true. But I need to remember that life isn't meant to be all work and no play.

Stop and smell the roses. Go to that free concert on a Wednesday night. Dance like nobody is watching you. Put down your phone. Put aside the work. Just live your life.

You only get so many great days, make sure you don't lose them to work and negative energy.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
