If you don't know Bunny Meyer, you're doing YouTube wrong, and that's a fact.
Known by her super recognizable username, "grav3yardgirl," Bunny is one of the best human beings I've ever had the pleasure of finding on the web, specifically because she is unapologetically herself, and it's hard to find truly genuine YouTubers. So many people try to adopt a persona or present themselves as someone else rather than who they are in the truest essence of their humanity.
Bunny doesn't follow that at all. She's loud, she's energetic, she's weird, and she owns the hell out of it. When people make fun of her teeth or the way she deviates from the "norm" (whatever that is), she isn't affected, and she speaks out about her understanding of it. Having experienced bullying throughout her life, along with depression, she knows what it's like to feel ostracized and alone. She is intimately familiar with what it's like to not love yourself.
But she is changing the narrative around identity. She's teaching us, through her videos that have nothing to do with being proud of your own identity as well as those that do, that whoever you are is perfect. You don't have to change anything about yourself for anyone but yourself. And if you don't want to change anything at all, then you're right where you need to be.
Bunny is not afraid to show up on camera and talk candidly to us, with or without makeup. She embraces her "flaws" and, as a result, they are no longer flaws. It's just Bunny, not any of the heartless things people try to label her as. Her beauty radiates from both within and (obviously!) from the outside. Look at this total babe!
She collects creepy knick knacks, like vintage photos and baby dolls. She indulges in her own fashion sense that may or may not involve these baby dolls (hint: they sometimes do) and shows us on Instagram and YouTube the outfits she's put together. Those are things that make her happy, and seeing her enjoy herself brings that happiness into my life, too.
It does for a lot of people, and that's why Bunny has over eight million subscribers on YouTube and almost three million followers on Instagram. She is so insanely generous and frequently hosts giveaways, one of her most popular being the Back to School giveaway. This year's was crazy! It included a huge tie-dye backpack from Spencer's, which is something I've certainly never seen before.
And as Bunny says in the video, she hopes that the giveaway prizes will go to someone in need, who maybe can't afford school supplies this year. She truly has a heart of pure gold. She treats her subscribers not like fans, but like her own, and that's why we're the "Swamp Family," eight million strong and ever-growing. Her connection with us has spread to businesses as well, and she has her own makeup line with Tarte, the limited-edition "Swamp Queen" palette and two lip paints.
Thank you so much, Bunny, for putting yourself out there and letting us get a glimpse of your life through YouTube and social media. You bring such brightness into my day. From New York to Texas, thank you, thank you, thank you for being who you are and helping show me that who I am is the only person I ever need to be.
