If anyone is more excited than your mom and dad about pregnancies, its your grandparents. Your grandparents are the ones that taught your parents how to raise you, so you are a mold of your parents, and of course, your grandparents. But what could be better than that? Although I don't remember as much as I wish about when I was a kid, I have memories of the events that I will forever hold on to. Also, the multitude of home videos we have in our house allows me to fall into a deep remembrance of what the younger years were like.
If I can tell you one thing about my grandparents, it's that they were constantly here for us. Whether it was my grandpa mike coming over to babysit while my parents were out, or both grandma Helen and grandpa mike taking us to Nathan's every single time we wanted it, they were always there. We spent hours in the arcade, and I always remember getting slime for my prize, and my grandpa would not let me play with it in the car. But the sleepovers were the best. Painting my grandmas toenails was a highlight, duh. No but seriously, my sleepovers with my grandma and grandpa is where I got my love for The Golden Girls from. My grandma and I would watch every single episode, as raunchy as they were, and sit there dying laughing. Oh was Betty stupid. Falling asleep each kid on a side of my grandmas bed, and waking up in the morning to my grandpa coming back from the bagel store, with my grandma making grits and eggs is a delicious memory imprinted in my mind.
My dad's parents grandpa jerry and grandma Nina always made sure they got a laugh out of us. For every holiday my grandma would sing us a song, and even let us record her singing, eventually putting it on our youtube channel "The Sydney and Mackenzie Show." I remember the greatest memories at their old house, the huge backyard, the piano, and of course how could we forget the attic. I can't remember if any of my dads siblings lived up there, but it was awesome. My grandpa and grandma would bring us up there, showing us around, vintage things everywhere. And of course my favorite, the swing! We never failed to have a great time at their house. When all the cousins were there, we knew we would have fun. My dad always tells me the funniest stories about growing up in that house, like pushing my aunt down the steps in a box to try it out, and prank calling people when my grandparents were out. The amount of fun they had there really portrays in their personalities now as my dad is deemed to be the funniest person I know.
Both sets of my grandparents really showed me what true love was. They were great examples of human beings, and always brought such light and happiness in my life. Now whether its calling my grandma a badass every time I see her, or laughing at every single one of my grandpas jokes, I still admire them as much as I did when I was younger. Sometimes I wish time would stop so we could go back and remember how easy life was. Never take your grandparents for granted, because they really try more than anyone else to love you to the best of your abilities. To all the grandparents out there, thank you, and to mine, thank you even more. You have made me into the outgoing, funny, strong person I am today,
With love always,
Mackenzie Drew Silverman
