Grading Summer Flicks from 2k14

Grading Summer Flicks from 2k14

The summer is all too quickly coming to an end. Which means my addiction to summer movies must lie dormant for another nine months until school is out again.

After seeing some of my new favorite, and new not-so-favorite, movies this summer, it's time to grade what we were given. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see every single movie this summer (which was, I admit, my plan), but thankfully I have friends and family who were willing to help. So let's get this started.

Mom's Night Out - F

I got roped into seeing this one, and I was not happy afterwards. It wasn't funny, and it was a tad obnoxious. I know Christian moms who are more normal and more fun than any of these characters, and it felt like a slap in the face to them... So no. Though Trace Adkins was a pleasant surprise.

Sex Tape - D-

To be honest, I'm not always the biggest fan of Jason Segel, and sometimes Cameron Diaz bothers me. But besides that, I just didn't like this movie. It wasn't funny enough, if they were going for comedy, and it just felt odd. It wasn't as crude as I thought it would be (thank God), but it felt a little too "family-friendly" to be called "Sex Tape."

Transformers - D-

When are they going to stop making Transformers movies? It wasn't the worst of the franchise's movies thus far, but it was nowhere near good. The movie was way too long, and Michael Bay's directing makes me think that all he's interested in now are special effects, explosions, and chaotic loudness.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - D

Just... no. I didn't like TMNT when it was a cartoon, and I wouldn't like it as a movie. Which is why I asked my friends who saw it. According to them: it wasn't entertaining, but it wasn't as bad as expected. It's boring and feels like a Transformers movie thanks to director Michael Bay.

Let's Be Cops - D

Unfortunately, this movie didn't really hit its stride. It felt drawn out and, even though I love Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson, it was just not good. Sorry, guys.

Tammy - D+

I love Melissa McCarthy, but I didn't like this movie. If I'm being honest, recently it's seemed like she's playing the same character over and over again. I miss her as Sookie in Gilmore Girls. But that's another story. McCarthy is awesome on screen, and I love her. But the movie just didn't stick together, and it was a let down. I still think that, if the directing had been better, the movie would have been much more lovable and memorable.

A Million Ways to Die in the West - C-

The movie was funny, but not dying laughing funny. The cast was stacked, but all in all, the movie didn't live up to expectations. Actually, a lot of the movie was beautiful: the videography, the music, the locations. But other than that, I was pretty bored.

The Purge: Anarchy - C

I'm scared by stuff like this. I know a ton of people liked this sequel, but it's a no from me. I feel like the movie didn't hit the mark it was aiming for, was super gorey, and felt way too shallow. And yes, I know this is a horror movie.

Lucy - C

I'm 100% serious when I say this: Lucy is silly. There are huge plot holes, and whatever logic the writer/director used isn't understandable (at least to me). But Scarlett Johansson was awesome, and somehow manages to sell the story. Some of the effects are cool, but the ending is just ridiculous.

Hercules - C

I mean... Dwayne Johnson stated that he was "born" to be Hercules... Let that sink it. Okay, on the the review. The battle scenes weren't epic like they were obviously meant to be, and while it's fun to watch, the movie isn't as funny as (I think) they were trying to be.

The Giver - C+

This grade actually seems a little high to me. Maybe that's because I went in with high expectations, and then was disappointed that they made a story about oppression and finding the truth into a love story. I'm not bitter. Okay, I am. The Giver was, without a doubt, one of my favorite books growing up. I'm not happy with what they did to the story in the movie, but I'm not flaming pissed either. It kind of felt like they went on youtube and just grabbed a bunch of video clips and smushed them together, instead of Jonas experiencing everything like he did in the book. So I'm iffy about it.

The Fault in Our Stars - B-

I (sorta) liked the book, and as soon as I found out they were making a movie I groaned and started worrying. The beauty with a book is that so much more can be expressed because you don't have to read an actor's face, you get to read the character's thoughts. And while I know that preteens all over the world fell head over heels in love with Augustus Waters, the movie didn't have the same emotional impact on me as the book did.

Maleficent - B

I actually really liked this adaptation of the classic Sleeping Beauty. The movie surprised me. I am generally not an Angelina Jolie fan, but I loved her as Maleficent. I kind of want to give this a lower grade, but compared to the other films on the list, I did like this one. However, the film wasn't magical enough for me, and I wish the story was a tad darker.

The Hundred Foot Journey - B

This is another movie I didn't get to see, but my cousin loved it. Helen Mirren is the best in anything, and makes everything she's in worth watching. The videography was beautiful, and it left my cousin super hungry (for actual food). However, the plot feels a little worn because other movies have covered the same kind of story. But I am totally willing to see this film.

Edge of Tomorrow - B

I was surprised that I liked this film. It felt long, but I still enjoyed it. I don't really have a ton to say about this movie, because I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, but he managed to convince me to like him (in this film anyways).

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes - B+

I didn't see this, but my roommate did. She didn't want to see the movie, but ended up enjoying it. The whole monkey talking thing was a little hard to handle, but the movie was emotional and was able to both live up to and expand upon the first movie.

Neighbors - A-

I have no shame in admitting that I loved this movie. I was excited to see it and wasn't disappointed. The humor wasn't concentrated in just one actor; all of the characters were funny and had their moment to shine.

22 Jump Street - A-

I've written about this movie already this summer, so to keep it short and sweet: I loved it, but not as much as 21 Jump Street, and I do think that the chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum grew. Moving on.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - A

I don't even care that this is a "children's" movie. I love this movie to pieces. I, cross my heart, cried during it. And I don't like crying in movie theaters. The animation was beautiful. It was breathtaking. And it was emotionally deeper than the first film, as it should be. And it built off the first film in the best way possible and reached amazing heights. I could go on about this movie for days...

X-Men: Days of Future Past - A

To be perfectly clear, I was not an X-Man fan before this movie. I didn't hate the movies, but I wasn't itching to see this. And I had never seen a full X-Man movie before this (bits and pieces don't count). But I really enjoyed this. From the people who actually educated me on how awesome DoFP is, I've learned that it was an awesome combination of the whole franchise. I found it to be perfectly paced, and and well written.

Guardians of the Galaxy - A+

I've seen it twice, and I can't wait to see this one again. It's a superhero movie, but a comedy, and emotional, and I didn't really know what I was signing myself up for when I bought my ticket. Honestly. I got misty-eyed during the first five minutes of the movie, and then again at the end when our favorite tree died. It was so beautiful shot, and the writing was amazing. It left me wanting to see it again, which is why I did.

Boyhood - (TBD, but really A+)

I haven't seen this movie yet, and I'm pissed that I haven't. But I'm so stoked to see it. From what I've read, it's going to be epic, and beautiful, and intimate, and amazing, and just... wow. I don't know how else to describe how excited I am for this movie to finally be shown. Twelve years in the making, and I'm just itching to finally see it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
