Gossip Girl Rewind

Being sick sucks! I get sick or hurt at least once a semester. Freshman year it was a stress fracture on my left foot in the fall and the flu in the spring (even though I had gotten the flu shot) and a broken toe. Sophomore year it was a high fever the day before my first human resources prelim in the fall and bad asthma in the spring.

So of course it is fall 2014 and I've come down with another cold aka a horrible sore throat with the chills and a low fever yesterday. However, although I hate being sick, I am always prepared. I have my medicine box filled with Dayquil and Nyquil pills and liquid, Advil, Pepto Bismal pills, and a thermometer (plus I had my brother run out to the store and get my Tylenol).

I'm ok with being sick this weekend because I can have a Gossip Girl marathon. Although the series ended two years ago, it is still one of my favorite shows because I learned everything about growing up from the show.

Gossip Girl taught me:

  • keep your friends close and your enemies closer
  • whatever you do with your life, marry the right guy (Serena found Dan, Chuck found Blair, Nate found work, Uncle Jack found Georgina, if these people could make it than so could you)
  • what you actually do doesn't matter, as long as you appear to have your crap together (this is true about life in general especially when it comes to job interviews, I was sick during my interview on Thursday and just pretended I was fine)
  • its ok to make up and break up (several times or at least once a year)
  • go for what you want in life before who you want
  • we make our own destiny
  • treat your body with respect
  • when life is falling apart rebuild it (Serena knew exactly how to rebuild each and every time her life fell to the lowest of low)
  • when your career is concerned, there are no excuses (I completely agree with this because I believe there is no such thing as no when it comes to work)
  • be romantic (don't give ultimatums about the empire state building though, it will never go well)
  • never doubt yourself
  • the past will come back to haunt you (one word: Georgina Sparks)
  • people rarely change even if their outfits do (look at pictures from the first episode and last episode for every character, yeah they physically have grown up because its been over five years)
  • date outside your type (Nate and Vanessa, Blair and Dan)
  • popularity ain't its all cracked up to be
  • famous people want to be just like us (Olivia aka Hilary Duff, one of the best guest stars on Gossip Girl ever)
  • falling in love can be risky, but the risk can make it all the more worth it in the end
  • a girl’s just gotta let her hair down every once in a while (Blair's bachelorette party, Serena and Blair playing dress up after they stole the clothes from the photo shoot)
  • at some point we have to learn that not all fairytales come true
  • there’s nothing wrong with putting away our pride and leaning on others for support
  • not everything in life comes easily; sometimes you have to work for what you really want
  • natural beauty trumps cosmetic beauty (who remembers lair's sleepover from the first season?)
  • nothing good ever comes out of lying
  • a true best friend is someone you can go to hell and back with and still be there for each other in the end
  • it’s never too late to make a fresh start

There have been some great moments such as Eric coming out of the closet, Serena believing that she was married in Spain, and Dan finally coming out as the blogger behind Gossip Girl. Think about Serena's time out in California  when she runs into Charlie or when Blair and Serena were in Paris or when Blair tried to take care of Chuck after his father died. Who forgets when Cece died and it was finally revealed the Charlotte Rose wasn't the real Charlotte Rose? My two favorite episodes are the very first and the very last episode (even though Blair seems way to skinny in the pilot and they changed the actress who would end up being Blair's mother, I happened to like the second woman much better anyway).

Here are some of the best of the bests:

Best Love Triangle: Dan-Blair-Chuck Whoever thought that this triangle would ever have existed during the very first season, if anything it was supposed to be Serena-Nate-Blair which never really happened because both Blair and Serena gave up, at one point it was Vanessa-Nate-Blair and Vanessa-Chuck-Blair

Best Fashion Statement: Blair's Prom Dress and Serena's Grey Dress from when the saw the ballet (when she was seeing her professor)

Hottest Sex Scene: Blair and Chuck beginning scene of Episode 1 Season 6 from after the poker table or whatever gambling game they were playing (the real question is where did Uncle Jack go)

Best Villain: Georgina Sparks

Best Cat Fight: Serena and Blair at Yale

Most Romantic Moment: Chuck finally telling Blair that he loves her after going around the world to get her favorite things

Worst Parent: Lily Van Der Woodson/Bass/Humphrey

Biggest Train Wreck: Jenny Humphrey who basically was written off the show because Taylor Momsen was supposedly a bitch

Weirdest Couple: Vanessa and Chuck (I didn't think this is so weird but I guess it was one of the weirder pairings, I thought Blair and Dan was just so so weird)

Most WTF Storyline: Lily and Rufus having a long lost child (especially the fact that Cece was the one to tell Rufus about the kid)

Most Forgettable Love Interests for Serena: Aaron Rose aka the artist whose father ends up marrying Eleanor, Ben Donovan aka the guy who got accused of raping Serena but didn't actually, Trip Vanderbilt aka Nate's married cousin

Greatest Accessory: Chuck's pocket squares in every single one of his suit jackets

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
