It's currently 1:45 a.m., and I have just returned from a night in Portland at one of the best concerts I've been to.
Rewind about a month or so, and while driving with my friends, one of my friends asked us if we had heard this band Jukebox The Ghost. None of us had, and he proceeded to play us one of their more popular songs. We all immediately fell in love with the song, and upon returning home, we all typed them in on Spotify and listened to their entire discography within a matter of days.
Spotify is great because it tells you when artists you like will be in town near you. We saw that Jukebox was going to be in Portland on February 12. After a quick Google search, we found that tickets weren't very expensive, and it was in a really nice venue. We decided, what the heck, and bought our tickets. Throughout the next few weeks, they were all we listened to, and we tried to memorize their popular songs so we could be good audience members. The countdown began, and before we knew it, we were all getting ready to go into Portland and have an awesome night.
My friends and I accidentally got there about two hours early, so we were waiting outside for the doors to open and saw that there was an opening act. This was unexpected, and we couldn't really do anything to listen to their music, so we just decided to be surprised by whatever was going to happen. The doors open, and my four friends and myself were the first ones in. We had our hands on the stage. After waiting another hour, the moment we had been waiting for.
I knew none of their songs. I didn't know what genre they were or what to expect at all, and it was fantastic. I was dancing and singing regardless. Then the moment we had been waiting for: the main act. Now, I had spent some time listening to their music, but I really didn't know many of their songs well. I still had the time of my life: singing and dancing and attempting to flirt with the band members, even though they definitely were doing things like music, you know the reason we all came to see the show.
There were times throughout the night where I felt "wow, I definitely don't belong here" because there were super fans who knew every single word of every single song and had the band merchandise to go with it. There were also times where I couldn't stop smiling. When you don't know the words to the song, and you don't really know the band that well, it can feel kind of silly to go to their concert. Concerts are made for entertainment, right? Let me tell you, I was entertained tonight.
If you have an opportunity to go to a concert, even if you don't really know the band that well, I encourage you to go. Especially when you have friends to go with you. Sing and dance and stand in the front row and flirt with the band members. Stop caring about what other people think, which is insanely harder to do than it sounds, but it's so much more fun when you dance like no one is watching. Go to the concert, man.
