A beautiful night, string lights hung like a tent across a lush lawn with surrounding flowers, models floating by in floral creations almost a part of the scenery.
For Baton Rouge and the LSU Botanical Gardens, this is a first and a dream that's been achieved with the combined efforts of many.
This event, Couture de la Fleur, is the first annual fashion show, and the brainchild of the LSU Agriculture Department head Dr. Russin. It was a joint effort between the design students at LSU and the students of the Mendel school of the Czech Republic. Elegant and charming, the runway showcased a number of blossom themed apparel that often incorporated real blooms that had been painstakingly attached by hand hours earlier.
After the presentation, guests were offered petite chocolate mousse and sparkling wine as they mingled with the models and designers. I had the privilege to speak with one of the LSU student designers, Miah Pickett. It was her debut on the runway, and she stated that her dress was inspired by the new Christian Dior collection.
The piece was a collaborative effort with a student from the Mendel School. Pickett finished the hand-stitched structure on Sunday, and her counterpart put the flowers on mere hours before the show to keep the roses fresh.
A little glamour and a lot of talent, Couture de la Fleur brings to life to the Baton Rouge art scene.
