When You Give A Girl A Summer Anthem
Morgan Sessions

As the summer quickly approaches, there is always that one song that is on the back of your mind, reminding you why you are here and of the plans you have to make to make that summer great. For me, that song is “Sleepless Nights” by Never Let This Go. I have had my fair share of ups and downs throughout the school year, as I’m sure you have too! This song is a reminder to me that this summer is going to go just right and that I do have a lot of exciting things going for me. Sometimes I feel like I try so hard to make other people happy that I forget about myself, and “Sleepless Nights” tells me that it’s okay to let go sometimes and try to make myself happy for once. Keep reading to find out more and maybe this song will become your anthem too! (Play the song while you read!)

Sleepless nights getting nowhere
It’s easy to be hard on yourself
When I know how much you care

Sometimes I feel like I am getting nowhere in life, a feeling that I am sure you can relate to. I can feel stuck where I am and like there’s no way I can move forward. I care so much about people, and I get hard on myself when I can’t be there for them. Even if I have only spent a few hours with you, you will be able to see that I would never want anything bad to happen to you.

And you’re lying in a bed of doubt
Wondering if everyone has figured you out
Trust me when I say they’re wondering the same

I never really wondered if people have figured me out per se, but I do wonder what they think of me. Sometimes, I don’t think they really understand me, who I am, and who I want to be. I am growing up, and I’m changing into the person I want to be, and sometimes I don’t think that person matches with what other people think I want to be. But, you know what? That’s okay.

Sing with me
When you think too much
It’s hard to let go
Don’t worry about what you can’t control

I worry. I get anxious. I overthink. These lyrics were almost like a slap in the face to me. Now, when things start to overwhelm me, I can think of this song and remember that some things I cannot control, and I shouldn’t worry about them since I can’t control them. I have already repeated this to myself quite a few times, and it has helped me to look forward to my future and let go of the bad.

I’ll tell you as many times as you need
You are right where you need to be

God, these lines were like a breath of fresh air for me the first time I heard them. For this, I want to thank David and the rest of the band for bringing this song to life. I’ve come close to tears with the realization that I am right where I need to be. It’s okay that I don’t have everything perfect right now, but it will all fall into place. There are a lot of great things coming my way this summer, and I bet there are some pretty great things heading toward you too!

Everything starts and continues from now
Just as you see it your dreams are the clouds

I am very excited for this summer, because one of my dreams is coming true! I am so very fortunate to have an internship doing exactly what I want to do for my career. Words cannot express how excited and blessed I feel for this opportunity. I know big things are ahead of me, because I am going to learn so much. This summer, my dreams are in the clouds, and they are taking me with them.

We’re growing up, we’re not growing old
But life is just numbers if you do what you’re told
Go to school, get a job, and retire someday

I am turning 21 this summer, which is a big milestone in life. This summer is also going to give me somewhat of a break from all the “numbers” of life. I am not taking summer classes, but I do need to work in order to pay for myself when the school year comes back around. Then I need to finish up my last year of college so I can graduate, get a job, work for the majority of my life, and finally retire. So, I guess life is just numbers after all. At least I’m motivated this summer!

I refuse to live my life looking forward to the end
Don’t look forward to the end

Speaking of being motivated, here are some motivational lyrics for you. Live your summer to be the best you can be! Don’t just look forward to the end of things; this is only the beginning for you! Go out there and show the world what you’ve got!

Sing with me
When you think too much
It’s hard to let go
Don’t worry about what you can’t control
I’ll tell you as many times as you need
You are right where you need to be

Read these through again, because they are just so important to remember.

I’ll tell you as many times as you need
You are right where you need to be

The repetition of this last line just hits the nail on the head. Always remember that you are in the right place in your life right now.

The choice is always hard because you can’t go back
You’ll always be thinking about what you could have done
What you could have had

I think about my past a lot and hold onto things from it that I really should let go. It’s true, you can’t go back; you can’t change what you have done or what others have done to you. What you can do, though, is look to the future at what you can do. Let’s start now.

Just trying to do right by yourself
But your heart and your mind they fight like hell

I try every day to do the right thing, and it must have gotten me somewhere since I got my dream internship for this summer. The second line hits me, though, and I know some of you will be able to relate. Now, let me know if you got something different from the second line. What relates to me most is the fact that my heart and my head battle each other sometimes. My heart wants one thing, but since I am a people pleaser, my head says I should do the opposite to make others happy. This summer, I want to work on doing more things to hopefully get my heart and my head to be on the same page.

When you think too much
And it’s hard to let go
Don’t worry about what you can’t control
I’ll tell you as many times as you need
You are right where you need to be

As we finish up the song, think about all the plans you have for this summer. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do.

When you think too much
And it’s hard to let go
Don’t worry about what you can’t control
I’ll tell you as many times as you need
You are right where you need to be

Make this summer the best one yet, and always remember, you are right where you need to be.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
