I recently had a conversation with one my friends about the disappointing lack of "Godzilla" movies on Netflix.
It made me a little sad. I thought of how I grew up watching those movies on VHS, which made me think of other things that I watched when I was a kid.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was just a blur of action movies.
Growing up with three brothers, Disney movies or chick flicks weren't really options unless I was watching by myself. But I was perfectly okay with that. Because in action movies there was just more. You get action, romance, side character stories and sometimes even the villain's side. Sometimes it is a lot packed into one film, but I would rather have all that then watch the same generic will-they-won't-they love story.
That's the other thing about action movies: they're not always so predictable. I could tell you how ninety percent of Disney movies will end, but I didn't know how "The Hateful Eight" would play out until it was over. Action movies have the opportunity to take these twists because this is a genre based on keeping you entertained.
These movies also break the barrier of what we're comfortable with. Sometimes there are just explosions, other times there's just a major fight at the end, and in some cases, there's extreme profanity and gore. With the success of movies such as "Deadpool" and "Logan," superhero movies are moving towards this extreme because filmmakers are starting to realize there's a huge market for these types of R-rated films.
Granted, parents aren't about to let their kids see a superhero film that drops 84 f-bombs along with many other obscenities, but there's plenty of PG movies that are fair game. And kids are much more attracted to these fast-paced action movies than the latest Nicholas Sparks story.
I might have grown up with "Godzilla" tapes but kids these days have the entire Marvel Universe to watch. Because if one thing is for certain, it's that we still love our action.
