This past week I participated in the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the Word Has Ever Seen, also known as GISHWHES.
GISHWHES is a scavenger hunt that doubles as a charity, which is hosted by "Supernatural" star, Misha Collins, and is a week long in the beginning of August. Since being established officially in 2011, GISHWHES has broken eight Guiness World records: Largest Photo Scavenger Hunt, Largest Media Scavenger Hunt, Most Pledges for Campaign, Largest Online Photo Album of "Hugs", Largest Chain of Safety Pins, Largest gathering of people dressed as French maids, Most people in a decorated hat competition, and Longest human chain to pass through a hula hoop.
Something that I really want to express is how strange this scavenger hunt is.
Before participating, you must first read the "Commandments" page. There are forty-two commandments, while some are serious such as ones that state you must be safe, refraining from any dangerous activity, and you are not allowed to break the law to check off an item on the list. Other commandments, leave you scratching your head.
Such as rules number three, seven, ten, twenty-seven, and thirty-six: Rule number three bans the use of the word kale and the product kale during any scavenger hunt related activities. Rule number seven says, "Decency – It’s disgusting. This Scavenger Hunt has no tolerance for either decency or self-respect. If you possess either, leave it at the door." Rule number ten simply says, "hi mom." Rule number twenty-seven reminds participants to brush their teeth. And lastly, rule number thirty-six is a deceased rule that was "Born April 14, 2016, Died April 19, 2016" and we, as gishers, are "now grieving its absence."
The "Commandments" came out weeks before the items on the list, and after reading how strange just the rules were, made me ask myself what was I getting into.
The list of 176 items varied from strange tasks such as connecting the freckles on your face, playing a game of badminton in the middle of a mall food court, covering a whole wall in pictures of noses, creating a portrait of a famous dictator entirely made of feminine hygiene products, to confronting your boss or a co-worker while your covered in powdered sugar.
Other tasks were powered behind the act of kindness. Like serenading an under appreciated worker at a store, giving out free coffee while people were on their morning commute at a bus stop, volunteering at a veteran related facility, giving away a basket of goodies to the homeless, bringing flowers to a retirement home, and many more.
These items forced me to step out of my comfort zone, and become the center of attention in a public place. I mean, I sang to a butcher! In the middle of an Albertsons, while people walking by just stared at me! I wanted to die!
For a specific task I drove seven hours, round trip, to the Canadian border, to meet Misha Collins and wish his mother a happy birthday. When I got there I got to meet other people participating in the scavenger hunt and they were all so nice, and sweet.
At first, all the tasks seemed daunting. Luckily for me, I was assigned to an amazing team!
GISHWHES doesn't expect it's participants to complete the tasks by themselves, so we are put in teams of fifteen. Participants can request to be on teams with others who are registered, but since I didn't know anybody else participating in the scavenger hunt, I was assigned to a team at random.
I was assigned to Team Unnatural.
My team consists of people from California to New York, and all the way to London, and these people are freaking amazing! I instantly clicked with them, and related to them in a way that I never had with a group of strangers before. They were all supportive and encouraging when I told them about a task that I was working on, or told them how nervous I was about drawing so much attention to myself.
Our messages to each other not only talk about our tasks, but we share jokes with each other and confide in one another.
I'm so incredibly glad that I decided to participate in this years GISHWHES, because I got to experience kindness, friendship, love, and above all: humiliation. And I met the love of my life
