Whoever said diamonds are a girl's best friend has obviously never had a donut. I possess an unhealthy love for them and in all honesty, eat them way more than I probably should. Is that going to stop me? Yeah, no.
The only thing I like more than actually consuming donuts is looking at pictures of them. I'm currently obsessed with food Instagrams from San Francisco and New York boasting mile-high cheeseburgers, insane milkshakes that practically smell like diabetes, and of course, the insane donut options. Yes, please. So imagine my hype at finding out that my small college town had a shop that sold donuts that resembled those in my fave Instas (major hype).
Kai's Doughnut Co. is by far my favorite place to eat. The whole place has a really cool vibe that's perfect for eating and hanging out. From the plants in Cafe DuMonde coffee canisters to the brightly colored donuts in the cases, it has a very picture-worthy atmosphere. And in case you weren't already sold, the owners occasionally bring in their dog who sits in a chair. Donuts and dogs, what could be better?
While the atmosphere of Kai's is great, their food is even better. They have an amazing selection of donuts and kolaches. Not to mention, their Vietnamese iced coffee is the absolute bomb. They've got donuts that look like Elmo and Cookie Monster, complete with a chocolate chip cookie, and maple donuts featuring strips of bacon on top. They've got donuts covered in breakfast cereal, crunched up cookies and candy. Plus specialties like German chocolate cake, and traditional choices like sprinkles and glazed. My personal favorite donuts include:
1. The Nutella Filled One
This donut is foodie heaven, and not to mention completely photogenic. It's a square shaped pillowy donut covered in cinnamon sugar and filled with Nutella. It's so good and super filling. 10/10 would recommend.
2. The Samoa One
If you don't like Girl Scout cookies, then I probably don't like you. But for those who do, the Samoa donut is basically the best thing ever. A yeast donut with peanut butter frosting, a chocolate drizzle, and a cookie showcased on top. This is (Cue Chris Traeger voice) literally the only way anybody should eat cookies.
3. The Red Velvet One
Whoever decided to turn chocolate cake red was a genius and Kai's tribute to red velvet cake is delicious. It's simple, a glazed red velvet cake donut with a cream cheese frosting swirl in the middle, but so good I'm always ready to eat at least 3 of them. Plus, they're just really pretty too.
Basically, if you're ever in College Station/Bryan area, Kai's is a place that should be on your To-Eat list. If not, you're seriously missing out.
