Hi, Boy Scouts of America,
My name is Brandy, and I am a Girl Scout of the United States lifetime member. I have a few things that I would like you to be aware of while proposing to have girls be welcomed into your organization.
You offer the same things to boys as GSUSA offers to girls. I went camping, learned how to tie knots, was given leadership opportunities, and was taught some basic business skills. We have an award that is our highest award just like you do. The vast majority of the girls who don't think that both organizations offer the same things are the girls who quit in the third grade. Sure the first couple years of being a girl scout might be different and offer different things but after that we are equals. Why take away from us?
You are trying to become inclusive because you are seeing a drop in membership numbers. So props to you for realizing that something is wrong and opening your doors to transgender boys. However, shame on you for trying to take away from not one but two other scouting organizations.
Adventure Scouts is already a co-ed scouting group. Why do we need another co-ed scouting organization? If you open your doors to girls how are you any different than the adventure scouts are?
I would be more open to seeing this happen if 1) we already didn't have a co-ed scouting organization and 2) if I didn't see this having more bad things happen than good things.
For example, a bad thing that I see coming out of this is that when puberty hits the hormones that go through the bodies of young men and women give them urges. Boys and girls natural separate into social groups by gender because of this and if you throw a girl into a mix of boys going through puberty it will only make everyone uncomfortable.
I'm not saying that you 100% should not be doing this. But I am saying that you need to do some good research and find a better way to increase your numbers. If we already have a co-ed scouting organization why do we need two? If people want to have their kids in co-ed scouting they will and that is when they have been sending them to be apart of the adventure scouts. We can successfully have three scouting organizations if you don't take away from both the girl scouts and the adventure scouts.
Please consider what I have taken the time to say to you before finalizing your decision to let girls join BSA.
Yours truly in scouting,
Brandy
