You frown at the thought of walking through Target to pick up a few house necessities knowing you'll be forced to walk through the isles of flavored chocolates and oversized teddy bears. In every department store, you find girls who are hopelessly in love shopping for the perfect dress for a nice valentine dinner, while singing along to the sappy love songs playing on the loudspeaker above. It takes everything in you not to tear down the heart-shaped stickers on the windows of, well, everywhere as you prepare for your "table of one" valentines.
Let's face it, when you're single on Valentine's day, you just feel a little less everything. A little less admired, a little less beautiful and a little less loved.
So, here is what you do: go buy yourself some roses. Buy a wonderful dinner, for yourself. Jam out to Single Ladies by Beyonce and embrace the day!
Ladies, this is the day to show that you are more independent than ever! Don't get me wrong, if you have a significant other, enjoy the day with them, you deserve it. But if you don't, that's okay too! You are just as wonderful as you were on February 13th, and as you will be on February 15th.
Trust me, I know that Valentine's day seems like a constant reminder of how lonely you feel. But you don't have to feel lonely at all.
Go grab some of your closest friends, grab some snacks and party decor, and throw a Galentine's night! No, it's not just something seen on tv, my friends and I have done it.
The point is, Valentine's isn't a day meant for us to feel sad. The day is about love, and there are a lot of things that we should love; our family, friends, morning coffee. Not just the guy who didn't ask you to be his valentine.
You don't have to have a guy with you on Valentine's day to tell you that you are worth something. You are worth something on your own; others will never define that. A day will not define that. A guy will not define that.
When you're single, that world makes it seem as if you are meant to be the Grinch of Valentine's day. But the world is wrong.
We have to remember, Valentine's day is just a day. It isn't a defining moment. It is a day meant to feel love and give love, even if that isn't to a significant other.
I am 20 years old, and with the exception of third grade when a boy in my class gave me a giant Hershey Kiss, I have never had a Valentine. But guess what, I'm okay with that.
I mean don't get me wrong, the sappy love songs can get a bit annoying at times, but so does the pop songs that play in department stores on a normal day.
So, this year, when you see a girl in the department store trying to find the perfect dress for her valentines day date, encourage her and tell her how nice she looks. While you're at it, pick yourself out a nice dress for a night with friends.
Embrace the day like you would any other, because, like any other day, we get to make it what we want.
