1. Teenage moms
A plot point which is essential to the story in both shows, Lorelai Gilmore and Xiomara Villanueva had daughters at age 16, much to the dismay of their very conservative parents.
2. Mother/daughter relationship
One of the most heartwarming features of the two shows is the mother/daughter relationship between Lorelai and Rory, and Xo and Jane which proves mothers and daughters can be best friends.
3. Complicated relationship with mother
Though Xo and Alba's relationship is much more functional than Lorelai and Emily, both have many conflicts over differing morals and behaviors
4. On/off relationship with father
From the very first season, both mothers have a very complex relationship with the father of their child which results in a series long back and forth for Lorelai and Christopher. As for Xo and Rogelio, Season Three ends with their wedding but given the drama on this show, who knows what could happen
5. Daughter becomes pregnant
A large part of "Jane the Virgin" revolves around Jane's virgin pregnancy, however, Rory's accidental pregnancy is not revealed until the final minutes of "Gilmore Girls: a Year in the Life." Despite the different ways the pregnancies are handled in the show it is easy to imagine that Lorelai will struggle with the same emotions Xiomara experienced watching Jane go through her pregnancy alone, much like herself.
6. Love triangle
The love triangles between Jane, Michael, and Rafael, and Rory, Dean, and Jess are very similar with the girls at first choosing the new guy with a "bad boy" persona but eventually going back to the original, reliable man.
7. Smart, driven daughters
Jane Villanueva and Rory Gilmore are both very smart and motivated girls who are hard workers and frequently have to play the mother role to their own mothers
8. Daughters are writers
The two girls are also both aspiring writers and each write a novel that is largely based on their own experiences.
