Finding time to read can be difficult, especially when juggling other responsibilities. At the end of the day, picking up a book seems just a little too exhausting. It is especially hard when other things are available to do like watching TV (which ultimately requires less attention) or playing video games. Reading the book you rented from the library three weeks ago just does not seem that important.
Although reading seems insignificant, it provides a lot of important benefits. Reading helps with gaining knowledge, stress reduction, mental stimulation, helps improve analytical skills, improves writing skills, expands vocabulary and enhances memory.
So, while forcing yourself to read that book seems like a little too much work, it has a ton of benefits. So pick up that book for at least 30 minutes a day. It does not matter how many pages you read, or if you get to the end of the chapter, it does not matter how long it takes you to finish the book, all that matters is that for half an hour during the day you choose to indulge in reading something for pleasure.
You can choose to read the book at any time or place during the day. It does not have to be at night, or at a library or in your bed. You can read while waiting for your appointment or if you get to class early. The 30 minutes do not have to be consecutive, making the task easier to accomplish,
Besides setting a timer and preparing to read (which is what might help motivate others), it can be very stressful for other people trying to squeeze in those 30 minutes. Another way to be motivated is to go pick up as many books as you want that you think will be interesting. Therefore, if you get home and the first book is a little boring you still have the second, third, fourth or fifth one. Choosing multiple books makes sure that you will have at least one you are interested in to pick up every night and read for a little.
Lastly, starting a book club can be a great motivator. You are able to read books with your peers and because you will all be meeting to discuss the book it puts you on a deadline forcing you to read at least a little every day. Furthermore, being able to discuss a book and hear other people's perspectives can really help open your mind and add to the feeling of wanting to read and find out more.
