It was my first day of class, and I was scared to death that I would be late. I was rushing to my government class that evening not knowing the material as much as my other science class and I arrived in a panic. I walked into the classroom with about a minute to spare and chose a seat (I use the word "chose" lightly because most all of the seats were taken). I was seated in between the instructor and this tall, suave looking man and he smiled at me as if to say, “Hello, good evening,” with a deep, rough voice.
His smile spoke to me. He gave this smile as if it was radiated by the sun since it gave warmth to my soul. I would say his smile was genuinely sweet too; it felt as if a touch of candy has been attached to the curve of his lips. It was not only that his friendly smile made me feel welcomed to the class, but it was as if the stress of being late to class had been lifted from my shoulders.
I wonder how many people he had smiled at and how many people had given him an appreciation of his beautiful smile like I had. This is not a love story, but I do think to myself that a smile has the power to change someone’s life. The smile that he gave was the kind of smile that I can look forward to seeing in each and every person that I come across in this world.
Just by smiling at someone, it gives them the strength to get through their day. It can even change their dark mood to a lighter one within a second.
The minute I was about to leave the class, I soon realized that the way my parents taught me to smile had reasons. That boy's smile taught me how little effort is needed to change someone’s day. Since then, I try to put a genuine smile on my face every day, in the hope that I can make my day and the day of others a little brighter.
Put a smile on today. It looks great on you.
