If you don’t live under a rock, you have definitely been attacked by heart-wrenching TV spots for the new film “Me Before You” starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, or have at least seen the buzz about it.
You may have just been innocently watching "The Bachelorette" on a boring Monday night when it was so rudely interrupted by the poplar voice of the lead singer of X Ambassadors screaming “HOLLLLLDDDDD ONTO ME.” Or maybe it was the beautiful voice of Ed Sheeran singing “loving can hurt.” Either way, no matter which song played, you were powerfully hit with an immense amount of feels as Emilia and Sam shattered your heart within a 30-second commercial.
Now, I am aware of the controversy this film is facing, but I am not here to discuss the film itself or the many different points of view people have about it. I am simply here to discuss the genius that is the “Me Before You” soundtrack.
Anybody who knows me knows that I am a music freak (and if you didn’t, now you do). Music is always shaking the floors of my house (sorry, Mom, Dad and Karina). It’s safe to say that soundtracks for movies intrigue me and I love the fact that there is music throughout the world that can fit any storyline you could ever imagine coming up with. I always observe the music chosen for film and how well it fits with a storyline. Each song chosen for the “Me Before You" soundtrack is unbelievable and has such an effect on the movie and the emotions it causes you to feel.
1. "Numb" – Max Jury.
A major part of this story is that Sam’s character, Will, has the idea that Emilia’s character, Louisa, is not living her life as fully as she should. Although we are unaware of this when this song plays in the film, looking into the lyrics, Max states “don’t you know that you can fly away, don’t you know that you can leave,” only developing the storyline to live your life, well, boldly.
2. "Happy With Me" – HOLYCHILD.
Ah, yes, one of my favorite discoveries from the soundtrack. Let’s just say this song makes you want to roll down the windows while it blasts through your speakers… enough said.
3. "Unsteady" (Erich Lee Gravity Remix) – X Ambassadors.
The first time I ever heard "Unsteady," I was in the kitchen at my job. As soon as I heard the intense beats of the song, I was hooked but all that I could remember was the fact that the artist talked about a mom and dad. I told my sister about this random song I heard and she instantly knew exactly what I was referring to. Now, the version from this movie is a remix. I will be the first to say that I hate remixes – don’t try to fix things that aren’t broken, right?! Well, I will also be the first to say that no remix has ever given me so many emotions at once. This is such a beautiful and intense take on an already beautiful and intense song.
4. "Till The End" – Jessie Ware.
Who doesn’t love a good ballad about love and happiness, right?
5. "The Sound" – The 1975.
The truest jam of all jams! I love The 1975, and this is probably one of my favorite songs off their latest album “I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It.” Another fun song that makes you wish to roll down the windows and blast it through the speakers (and yes, I have done that quite a few times).
6. "Surprise Yourself" – Jack Garratt.
The first time I chose to listen to this song, I was attacked with this desire to do something to surprise myself (pun not intended). But serious note, who doesn’t love to be motivated after listening to a high quality song?
7. "Don’t Forget About Me" – Cloves.
Well there has to be at least one beautifully heartbreaking song on the album, right?
8. "Photograph" – Ed Sheeran.
Ed Sheeran… Enough said.
9. "Not Today" – Imagine Dragons.
I am a huge fan of Imagine Dragons. This song is so soft and different from anything I have ever heard from them before (definitely not a bad thing). Within this song we are able to see a different side of Imagine Dragons, basically proving that there is nothing they can’t do well!
I highly recommend that you go see the film “Me Before You.” While you are in awe by how perfectly each song fits with the storyline and current action of the film, you can think of this article. And don’t forget, live boldly.
