For a lot of people, college is a very logical option. In today's society, this is even truer. It used to be that a college degree wasn't as necessary to do what you wanted in life, but nowadays, this isn't always the case. More and more students are the firsts in their families to go to four-year universities.

What exactly is a first generation student? It depends sometimes. Sometimes, it can mean that the student is the very first in his/her family to go to any sort of college. Other times, it can mean that the student is the first to complete undergrad. I am a part of the latter form of the first-generation student.

There are some things that you know if you're a first-generation student.

1. College is VERY expensive

Even if you're parents went to a two-year school, there is no way they were expecting such a huge price tag on a four-year education. You know it's going to be hard to afford this, but you're determined to do it anyway.

2. You're going to have to take out a loan

There's almost no way around this. You have to accept the fact that you are about to dive headfirst into debt. It's going to be the most amount of debt anyone in your family has ever been in. Everyone is biting their lips, hoping that this is the right choice for you.

3. You don't know anything about college

How do you apply? How do I sign up for classes? Is this the right meal plan? How do I choose a roommate? Do I want to live on campus or off campus? What about Greek life?

4. You're scared

There is nothing scarier than being the first to do something in your family. It's important to remember that you aren't alone. There are a ton of other people out there going through the same thing. Maybe your parents don't understand what you're going through as a student, but you can do this. It's terrifying to move away from home and do something new.

5. You're determined

You've got this! You are going to do great. Keep on working because you will be among the first in your family to get a degree. That's not something to ignore. You are going to make your family proud. You're stressed with school work and finances and the pressure from you're family, but you are going to persevere to get through this. You will make it!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
