Get ready for the nostalgia.

Games We All Played As Kids

I love browsing through the "90's kids will remember..." and "things from your childhood" lists on Facebook and reveling in the nostalgia. Somehow, it seems like pretty much everyone had the same toys when they were growing up. Similarly, it seems like we all played the same games, too, and the games we played as kids were the best. Before Xbox and smartphones, we played together (usually outside) and got creative. Here are some of the awesome games that we all played as kids.

1. Frogger

This was mostly played with large groups at camps or at events, but we all played Frogger as kids. The rush of adrenaline when you're the frogger is unbelievable. Also, the more dramatic the deaths, the better.

2. Mafia

This is basically a more intense version of Frogger that we played when we got a little older.

3. Folded paper fortune teller

I was a pro at making these. I'm pretty sure I made them on a daily basis during class.

4. Mancala

I'm pretty sure every classroom in elementary school had at least four Mancala boards. I think we mostly liked playing with the pretty marbles.

5. Dots and boxes

To be honest, I don't remember how to play this game even a little bit. All I remember is that I loved it.

6. Sardines

This was so much more fun than just regular hide and seek, since you got to be in a group.

7. Red light/green light

On green light, you would run as fast as your little legs could take you. Then, when they called red light, you would try to stop as quickly as possible, usually resulting in stumbling and falling over, then having to start over.

8. Telephone

You heard the weirdest things during a standard game of telephone. The biggest struggle was getting out whatever you heard without laughing.

9. ZAP

Your friends would write ZAP and a time on the back of your hand, and a boy's name on your palm. If you looked at your hand before the time they wrote, you had to ask him out. We used to play this all the time, but we always peeked and never followed through with asking them out.

10. MASH

The more outrageous the results, the better. Typical results included driving a van, being a garbage man, and marrying that gross boy in your class.

11. Heads up, seven up

On any given rainy day inside, this was played at recess every single time. The intensity of listening to the people walk around and hoping they chose you was real.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
